Natural crossfeed on headphones / earphones for foobar2000 v2.1 [major update made public]
Jul 26, 2016 at 6:09 PM Post #16 of 83
ok, so I tried a little and would obviously need more time to have a good grasp, but the 30 and 50 deg have the very typical crossfeed effect as far as I can tell. so they're cool if they fit to the listener. I'd rather use one where I can set what I prefer, but mostly because I got used to have options for everything.
the V2 now is interesting and strangely revealing of positions. it was a fun experience that really changed my mind on a few songs. but I have a clear problem with the high frequencies. I would be tempted to EQ down the high freqs(didn't check where yet). and on a few songs where the voice is not really mono but still mostly centered, the V2 can create too much of a gap and sound weird. so for daily use I think I would stick to the more classical approach of crossfeed with something pretty close to the 30deg version for my personal taste and any width loss is dealt with by my brain after a few minutes.
but for a few genres I'll keep the V2 around for some fun (probably with attenuated high freqs, but I'll have to test that).

ps: no it didn't really help more than any other crossfeed for my climbing center problem. so far the best result I got has been with the ER4+crossfeed and doing my best not to move my head. but as you suggest in this topic, having physical speakers in front of me does the trick with almost any music on almost any headphone( but again only as long as I do not move my head).

castleofargh I've updated the v2.0 package as 2.1 to also include impulses for 30 degrees apart speakers, you might want to try that.

Hi guys

I invite everyone to try out the latest version of Viper4Android
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=68473076#post68473076

Including capability to load 2-channel cross-channel convolution impulse files for full stereo speaker virtualization on headphones :beerchug: Just like the foobar capability talked about in this thread.

So now you can take this capability from foobar2000 onto your Android smartphone or any rootable Android-based DAP :beerchug:

Check out our Telegram group too :D

This morning, I was just thinking,"I really wanna ask Joe Bloggs about whether or not I can get something like this for my android smartphone, but I don't want to bother the busy audio god man with his work. Should I post in this thread or am I too greedy?

Thanks for your work. You are forever awesome~

How this crossfeed is compared with bs2b (http://bs2b.sourceforge.net/)?

Anyone has tested both (not at the same time, of course) and can give an opinion?

Say...can this work with Equalizer APO?

At least i couldn't make it work, while you can actually load the response .wav files, EQ-APO doesn't seem to include a stereo convolver.

Another thing:

there are other HRTF's available too:
http://recherche.ircam.fr/equipes/salles/listen/sounds.html

- try which one works best for you(remember the number)

http://recherche.ircam.fr/equipes/salles/listen/download.html

- download and extract whichever worked best for you

for 30° speaker angle:
- load "IRC_1003\COMPENSATED\WAV\IRC_1003_C\IRC_1003_C_R0195_T030_P000.wav" for left channel in stereo convolver

- load "IRC_1003\COMPENSATED\WAV\IRC_1003_C\IRC_1003_C_R0195_T330_P000.wav" for right channel in stereo convolver

Okee, it actually works(wouldn't have figured it out myself in a million years tho, this script puts a knot in my brain).
bigsmile_face.gif

Preamp: -4.7 dB
Copy: L2=L R2=R

#Left
Channel: L L2
Convolution: IRC_1003_C_R0195_T030_P000.wav

#Right
Channel: R R2
Convolution: IRC_1003_C_R0195_T330_P000.wav

Copy: L=1.0*L+1.0*R
Copy: R=1.0*L2+1.0*R2

would be best to copy the .wav files into ".../EqualizerAPO/config", and make sure that the sampling rate of the audio device is set to 44.1Khz.

This would be with Joe's files:

Preamp: -4.7 dB
Copy: L2=L R2=R

Channel: L L2
Convolution: Left 30deg real-sampled 44100.wav
Channel: R R2
Convolution: Right 30deg real-sampled 44100.wav

Copy: L=1.0*L+1.0*R
Copy: R=1.0*L2+1.0*R2

You need to be a little more specific when it comes to "convent directory". What does that mean? These .wav files won't load in the DSP directory and all 4 .wav file make an annoying click when you try to load them in the main directory. My amp has a crossfeed circuit (HeadRoom Micro) done with op-amps and I've yet to hear any DSP come close. But you've peaked my curiosity even  it seems fraught with difficulties.

Did you get the part where you're supposed to install a separate plugin, load that in the DSP directory, open the plugin and load the wav files into that?

(basically read through part A and B of the OP)

I tried it with my Koss ESP950 headphones the other night, sounds very interesting. Tonight I will try them with some iem phones and see how I like it that way.
