Maybe you should consider trying to upgrade to iOS 4 before you buy a new device, they fixed the EQ presets. They don't clip anymore.

the one that was clipping for me was "bass booster"

can you test it on a really bass heavy trance and verify it doesn't clip ?

i'm a little reluctant to upgrade because my old old old version supports tethering.  when i am at an airport etc i can go on the internet on my macbook through my iPhone.  i heard they blocked those features in the newer OS updates ?

if i had working bass boost i probably wouldn't need a new player.  i mean i don't want to pay just to have to carry BOTH a phone and a PMP with me when i jog.

? ? ?

After looking on Google I found this pretty funny, look at these kids complaining about a great update: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2472068&start=0&tstart=195

As far as I can tell, it works like it's supposed to, I've not noticed any clipping with the EQ.

I always kept it on the "loudness" setting in the ipod settings. Now, the "loudness" is super quiet, and the only way to make it louder is to turn off the EQ!  EQ settings are virtually useless now.

apparently ignorance is not always bliss !

i remember when i was a little kid i noticed that when most people use equalizer they put ALL of the bands up to the max.  that problem doesn't seem to be going away :)

perhaps apple should simply make an iPhone with 5 volume controls.  that way idiots will know it is superior to other players that only have one.  and of course the controls should go to 11:

and there i was thinking that apple messed up when they equipped the ipod/iphone with a compressor/distortion generator instead of an EQ, turns out it was their most brilliant move yet.

Made me laugh, this is true. One thing I've noticed after listening for a few hours after posting here is that bass booster just decreases all other EQ settings but slightly increases the lower ones, it's the reverse of the previous EQ. So by gaining bass you're losing the richness of mids and the sparkle on highs.

Simply put, the EQ still sucks, it just doesn't clip now.

Great! Glad it worked out for you. Be happy while you can because in the audio world happiness is very short lived!
