I've seen a lot of High End Systems on Head-fi and often see Headphones that cost less than 1/6th the price of the total units. I've seen the Grado Prestige Series used quite a lot, Sennheiser next possibly, Beyerdynamic, and then Audio-Technica as the most common at this price point.
 
So what is the general consensus on what are completely "safe" headphones that are < $300?

The HD600s are used a lot for this purpose for the price if I can recall correctly, also, I'd try the Mad Dogs, as they're very neutral, but not widely used.

I'd definitely agree on the HD600/650's, maybe including the Fostex T50RP since how modifiable and useful they can become.
