Monolith M1570 Over Ear Open Back Balanced Planar Headphones

I prefer the velours. In general my hearing favors velour pads on most headphones that use them. I seem to be overly sensitive to sonic reflections with leather pads.
for me it depends on the headphones, for example on the Elegia I undoubtedly preferred the Dekoni leather ones, even with the Fostex T60RP, but with the 1570 I have no doubts, 100% velour.

That is interesting about the Focal Elegia. I have only had stock pads on my Elegia and I don't really enjoy them. Perhaps I shall have to roll some leather pads on them to hear if they can become enjoyable for me.

I bought my Fostex T60RP MK3 thinking they would be an upgrade over my Fostex T50RP MK3. But I was let down and feel that they did not perform better than the T50RP. All have stock leather pads and I have never tried any others. T50RP is a fun little headphone for the price.

You absolutely have to try the Elegia with the Dekoni leather pads, I assure you that they become completely different animals, the low frequencies become telluric, but not intrusive, Camila Cabelo's Something's gotta give literally makes your skull tremble...

Just to add to this thread, these are exceptional.
Owned Audeze EL 8 for three years before a driver died and quoted 80 USD for return postage to USA. They were flat, resolving and excellent value. Also owned AKG K701 (excellent mids and highs, the less said about the bottom end the better).
Listened to LCD X (superb), LCD 2 (veiled), LCD 3 (wonderful) at various events but could never justify the expense at this stage in life.

The M1570 are fantastic and a whisker away from LCD X (with Dragonfly Red). I have grown used to the weight over time. The bass is exceptional - fast, tight and reaching down below 30Hz as it should with the leather pads. The mids are highly resolving and do not sound afflicted with peaks. The treble is smooth and detailed. The velour pads take out too much bass for my tastes but do enhance mid resolution.
I paid £338 for these following sending back some M1070 (harsh, clinical sounding with insufficient bass for my tastes). These sound like a sprinkling of LCD X magic for 1/3 the price. I am thrilled. All hail Monoprice.

Your post made me dust off my M1070 and do a comparo with my M1570. I wouldn't say the M1070 are harsh and clinical, but I feel they are not nearly as dynamic, and lack the effortless clarity the M1570 has. I also find the M1070 a bit too left / right biased, whereas the M1570 image better, and offer a full sphere of stage.

I do find that both take well to Oratory1990's EQs for M1570, despite the fact that Oratory1990 has no M1070 profile. The M1070 pick up more of the magic that joldman is looking for, and lose the veil that they have with stock tuning and leather pads.

@Chastity I assume it was you who (Chastity23 on reddit) who wrote, that you're using tweaked Oratory EQ for leather pads to restore vocals. Could you copy it please?
I could, but mind you that it's tweaked for my preferences and age.

Code:
Filter: ON LSC Fc 124 Hz Gain 5.5 dB Q 0.71
Filter: ON PK Fc 1100 Hz Gain -2.2 dB Q 2
Filter: ON HSC Fc 1300 Hz Gain 7 dB Q 0.71
Filter: ON PK Fc 3050 Hz Gain -1.8 dB Q 3
Filter: ON PK Fc 5000 Hz Gain -5.1 dB Q 4
Filter: ON PK Fc 8100 Hz Gain -4.6 dB Q 6
Filter: ON HSC Fc 10000 Hz Gain -3.6 dB Q 0.71
Preamp: -2.3 dB

Thanks, I'll check this in a spare moment when I go back to leather pads.
PS. Are those leather pads actually made of genuine leather or is it synthetic? I haven't found a consensus on that.

They are actual sheepskin leather. The whole pleather debate started because Zeos said they were pleather in a review of the M1070/M1570 and he is NEVER wrong.

And for comparison: Oratory1990 EQ for M1570 Velours

Code:
Filter: ON LSC Fc 40 Hz Gain 6 dB Q 0.71
Filter: ON LSC Fc 105 Hz Gain 5.5 dB Q 0.71
Filter: ON PK Fc 400 Hz Gain 1.4 dB Q 1.4
Filter: ON HSC Fc 1300 Hz Gain 1.5 dB Q 0.71
Filter: ON PK Fc 1200 Hz Gain -2.5 dB Q 2.5
Filter: ON PK Fc 2100 Hz Gain 2.5 dB Q 2
Filter: ON HSC Fc 10000 Hz Gain -2 dB Q 0.71
Preamp: -1.5 dB

Filter: ON HSC Fc 10000 Hz Gain -2 dB Q 0.71
Preamp: -1.5 dB
Where did you get that from? I actually don't remember where I downloaded it from, but I found some large AutoEQ folder on my pc and in Oratory section velour settings I have are as follows:
Code:
Preamp: -6.4 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 28 Hz Gain 6.4 dB Q 0.62
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 195 Hz Gain -1.8 dB Q 1.22
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 1169 Hz Gain -2.8 dB Q 1.90
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 2145 Hz Gain 2.5 dB Q 2.80
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 7185 Hz Gain 1.6 dB Q 1.51
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 39 Hz Gain -0.6 dB Q 0.96
Filter 7: ON PK Fc 40 Hz Gain 1.0 dB Q 2.75
Filter 8: ON PK Fc 338 Hz Gain -0.4 dB Q 1.57
Filter 9: ON PK Fc 364 Hz Gain 0.9 dB Q 3.21
Filter 10: ON PK Fc 19327 Hz Gain -3.8 dB Q 0.72
Also, why don't you preamp high enough to compensate for the EQ done? I thought you always wanna balance it to 0db?
Edit: I tried your EQ when I put on leather pads again (also stock Oratory and my own) and there is just no coming back for me, I didn't realize how hollow the M1570 sounded on leather pads. Bass slam on leather is incredible and they're good for electronic music, but acoustic music, especially symphonic sounds very unnatural. The overall timbre on velour is much more balanced.

Where did you get that from?
https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index/list_of_presets/ I NEVER use AutoEQ to get settings, because they are weird. Grab the PDF for the profile, and enter it manually into EQ APO. As for the Preamp setting, it's just a preference. I did say that my settings are tweaked for myself.

I grab his settings from here, then I use the 3 shelfs to adjust for my age. I slid the Low Shelf up to 124Hz to improve bass impact / slam without overdoing it.

I have tried a couple of pads bought from aliexpress, a velour one (dismissed) and a 'hybrid (felt/ fake leather) one that in stock form sounds very bassy and bloaty on the M1570, but with some cuts on the leather part sounds very well: I think I prefer it over both stock pads (I was using stock velour over stock leather before). Unfortunately, cuts (eleven for each side) are made with a simple pair of scissors, and the aesthetic result is not very good, but the sound is. By ear (I cannot measure them) it's the best midrange, with no hint of honkiness and almost no need to equalize. Worth a try, since they are very cheap (6,80 eur a pair, shipped from china, it's the 110mm version). I ordered another two pairs to try a different number of holes on each side and/or holes on the inside perimeter.
