Mod House Audio Tungsten - Planar Magnetic Headphones - Impressions and Discussion

Unsure if Zeos covered what he is using in the rest of his chain (haven't watched the video yet), but there are some dependencies that could make or break the SA1 from being an option.
- SE vs Balanced output being used on the SA1
- Voltage output of the DAC being used to feed the SA1
- SS vs DS Tungsten

Might be a decent pairing for a DS Tungsten if your DAC can output more than 4V balanced to the SA1.

I'm still patiently waiting for my DS Tungsten to land on Ryan's build queue.
In the meantime I'm soaking up as many impressions as I can while the Tungsten trickles into the world at large.
He did list out the dacs he was using though can't recall which ones but didn't seem to be anything too hot. His Tungstens though was a ss prototype said to be even less sensitive / harder to drive than the commerical version. So if the SA1 did drive it well then looks like it could be a great budget option for many.

The Violectric line looks great with their higher gains and voltages. Also heard they were doing a re-issue of the V281, which could also be a great pairing.
I have the original V281 and I can confirm that it’s a very good pairing. Plenty of headroom.

What about the Violectric V222 with these numbers shown on the right : How will it do with the Tungsten? :

Looks good but V281 has considerable more voltage and power at 150ohm range. V222 is good pairing but V281 should be better.

Will likely work well (but only one way to find out)

As noted, v281 more powerful/headroom and likely better, tho I think more expensive (unless u buy used which is a good option)

V281 is like double v200, crazy amp, need to get it at some stage.

i no longer own a v281, although I do have a Niimbus US4, which has more promising specs as we saw not too long ago :

I think this Niimbus US4 will do just fine if the V222 provea to be too underwhelming with the Tungsten.

Has anyone tried the latest version of Tungsten with Holo Bliss? I see a few months back it was not quite able to drive it to 100%, but wonder if the newer version makes a difference?

I think you’re right. Pls share your findings.. 🙏

I tried with my DS Tungsten (which is the latest iteration afaik). It can drive it but with limited headroom. If you have it already it would tide you over, but I wouldn’t get it for the Tubgsten as it’s far from ideal for it.

The only interesting aspect apart form the amp pairing info was the fellow at the end showing his Tungsten with the slider mechanism like Meze instead of the click variant. Is this the latest and standard improvement?
