Mod House Audio Tungsten - Planar Magnetic Headphones - Impressions and Discussion

No. And I’m glad you asked..

That depends on the amp - sometimes spec-ed and other times you can ask the manufacturer what’s the higher limit that’s safe to feed it. Some older single ended tube amps may like 2V inputs and designed around it. Modern amps tend to have more tolerance but it’s not uniform. Always check the specs (listed or inquired)
tell me if any of this sounds wrong... but I am under the impression you can push the amp stage until it clips.... so the input is normally set lower than the clipping voltage and that should take care of the dynamics in the kind of music you play.... ???

You can ask for longer cable options. I previously asked Ryan about it, if you email him he can work something out with Skedra, the provider of the cable. The price he quoted me previously was $50 extra per foot from the 6ft stock cable, so you can order it according to your needs. Otherwise, it's a 3.5mm jack so lots of options for custom cables if you wanna go that route.
Thanks for the answer. As I'm looking for a cable around 15 ft. That would get pretty costly. I'd probably just go the custom route as I can get some nice cables for less than what it would cost just to extend this one.

I'm not 100% sure I understood the question. but 3 points to consider, hopefully they answer what you were asking about:
  1. The clipping (if happened) would happen after the amplification - the input voltage itself wouldn't cause it
  2. When you put in a higher line-level voltage, your noise floor starts at a higher point, so when you amplifty off that. That's what limits your dynamic rnage (and that's why you also want a quite amplifier)
  3. My experience is that you can usually experiment with input voltagge to an amp. But, usually due to the rating of compoents on the amp input stage, some manufacturers do specific what voltage their amp should be supplied with. Deviating from that isn't advisable, unless you feel adventurous and can live with any unitnended consequences..
I hope I didn't miss (or misleading) with any info here.

I am thinking of acquiring the new Topping DX9. Here are it's power specs, is this enough.

Output power:
10000mW × 2 @16Ω THD+N<1%
7080mW × 2 @32Ω THD+N<1%
4250mW × 2 @64Ω THD+N<1%
950mW × 2 @300Ω THD+N<1%
460mW × 2 @600Ω THD+N<1%

Balanced Output:
Output Level
12Vpp @G=L
47Vpp @G=H

it's honestly quite hard to tell which one I like better; both are ready good in their own right.

currently still prefer my atrium, but that might change over the next few days. Does anyone know more about the double sided version? all I know is that it's slightly lighter and more power hungry.

p.s: the 300BMK2 has enough power for the tungsten (single sided)

I’ve only heard the DS briefly at Canjam but the single sided is “more power hungry” and the weight difference is negligible. From the Tungsten page at ModHouse…

“Because the double sided drivers are going to be higher impedance on average and require about 30% less current to achieve the same volume as single sided, we recommend choosing double sided drivers for tube amp usage.”

Specifications

· Double-sided:

· Weight: 515g

· Impedance: 155 ohm average

· Sensitivity: 78 dB/mW average

· Single-sided:

· Weight 520g

· Impedance: 135 ohm average

· Sensitivity: 76db/mW

· Cable: 6ft 4-pin XLR, OCC Copper Litz

I can confirm the above comment that the DS is ever so slightly more efficient.

@Cecala that is a really nice DAC/Amp. From the specs it should work well with the headphones. Zeos has a carbon that he’s getting close to releasing a review. The amp he was using is the Topping A70pro. It’s got lots of power and features that he pointed out. You could also search for a review of the DX9 on YouTube. Both are nice
