This played a big part in my decision for going back to the Empyrean’s. The Elite’s were indeed the upgrade to the Empyrean’s I wanted and you’ve highlighted their differences very well. It turns out, you hear both headphones like I do. After awhile, I noticed that I had a bunch of headphones that did similar things and this created some overlap for me. So I scanned my collection and made some tough choices on want could be traded and what I felt was missing from a sound standpoint.I can see why some people might prefer the Empyrean to the Elite, but I think those people probably have a headphone collection and want a stronger flavour of Meze. Or they simply prefer a thicker, more coloured and hazier/sweeter taste.
I wanted headphones that offered different flavors of sound, but also possessed good technical ability to satisfy my needs. I let go the Diana TC, Elites, Audio-Technica ADX5000’s, Kennerton Odin Thridi’s, Focal Celestee’s, and a couple of others. They were replaced with the HE1000 V2’s non stealth, HE-R10P’s, and the Phoenix Empyrean’s.
You also made a great point about how your chain should be considered when deciding on headphones. Synergy between components and headphones is so important and should never be overlooked. I know upgrades to my chain influenced my headphone decisions. Right now, I’m the happiest I’ve been since getting into this hobby. The headphones and components I currently have is what I’ve settled on. This comes after many tryouts, demos and owning many of top flight headphones including the Susvara’s, AB-1266 TC’s, and Solitaire P’s to name a few. I’m highly satisfied for now, but I can’t say I‘m done making changes
