Looks like I will be the proud owner of a set of Meze Empyreans soon. All I need to do is sell my Ether Flows/Z1R/Toxic Cables and I am ready to rumble! I can't wait :beerchug:.

Really looking forward to having an open headphone with a bit more of a bass tilt that the Ether Flows without loosing anything in the treble (at least according to reviews).

Great choice and smart move.
Welcome to the club and happy listening.
Meze Empyrean is a very special headphone from all the angles you may look!

So, today I finally had the opportunity to hold the Empyrean in my hands and listen to it for around 30min in a peaceful environment (connected a DAP with the 3.5mm jack and Meze cable ). First of all - the Empyrean is much lighter than I had imagined. Handling is great, it makes a solid impression without feeling massive. The comfort was also fantastic. My reference here is the Sennheiser HD800, and I found the Meze on my head more comfortable, the weight is well distributed and the headphones fit exactly - clamp is not too strong, not too weak. The Sennheiser, on the other hand (there was one which I grapped), seems now a bit too far stretching out and overly loose.

So far, so good. Now to my listening experience. On the player were some songs / excerpts of various genres. In summary, I found the meze very balanced, clearly on the dark, bass-heavy side without going into extremes. A solo piano sounds powerful, you feel the keys and the depth, akk sounds balanced and consistent. The selection of classical concerts on the player was rather limited, so I could not mciome to definite conclusion here. But from what I heard, I found the sound stage appropriate for a headphone of this price but not outstanding.

Overall, my initial verdict on the Empyrean is very positive, but it is also a pricey piece of gear. Actually, I was discussing with myself to sell my HD800s to (partly) finance the Meze. But since I got my ifi Pro iCan, my HD800S is impressing me again with the ifi’s XBass giving it the much-needed lower heft and the tube amp adding some warmth. I once more consider the HD800s to be the master headphone for great piano concertos with its huge sound stage, instrument separation and transparency.

As things stand after this first listening test, the Empyrean is currently for me not worth giving up the HD800s and spending an excess of 2k. But if I had only a mobile DAP player without any amp etc., then I would go for the Empyrean for sure.

With the XBass on the iFi Pro iCan the HD800s might sound more balanced but when I demoed them with the Sennheiser amp at CanJam London I thought it was way too bright... I guess that is why I am so interested in the Empyrean and your impressions make me feel like I have definitely made the right decision lol. Give me dat bass! As long as it is still good quality of course :deadhorse:

I’ve had some disappointment over the last few days in pursuing gear to further improve my music system. But today it is good news with the arrival of Empyrean heafphones that my dealer has been kind enough to let me borrow. I’m looking foward to giving them a good tryout and to compare with my Focal Utopia, LCD-4 and HE1000v2, all with stock cables, and with Prion4 and (if it arrives in time) a Danacables Lazuli Reference - I have adapters that allow me to use lemo-terminated cables with HE1000/LCD-4/Empyrean sockets.

Just because it doesn't take tons of power to listen to the Empyrean, it doesn't mean you will get close to their potential playing it through a DAP. Try listening to it will a good desktop amp.

Which pads did you use? I am using Alcantara mostly for the moment being to get used to the sound, but they are a bit dark. I'll switch to leather to compare. So far with Meze beautiful upgrade 4,4 cable, but eager to receive the Silverguard S3C from Norne Audio to see how it improves the cans

I (or better said the shop) used the Alcantara pads. They felt comfortable to me but if the leather ones feel anything like the Utopia’s, I’d chose those.

I am sure a great DAC and amp improves the Meze’s sound. But my point - for myself - is how much better does the Empyrean sound compared to a well-amped HD800s. And there I do not think it justifies the 2k or more. Buy if I had not the proper amplification and gear for the Sennheiser, the Empyrean is the better buy for sure.

you will love them i pretty much guarantee it. The Vertere cable is a good addition to these headphones and means you get the choice then of 3.5mm and 6.3mm when you want.

Gotcha. Note though that the 800S is also more efficient and that might play apart too. I think 100db versus 102db.

As Paul Revere once said, The Romanians are coming, The Romanians are coming. :gs1000smile:

The Empyreans have hit the States!!!

Arthur @ Violectric USA just received his stock.

Well after just listening to a few songs with my V281, and with them not being broken in yet, my Either Flow Opens are going up for sale. The Empyrean sound so good. And man, what bass slam!
