Been reading some feedback on these from ces and apparently they they sound really thin and bright lacking bass and still leak sound as their not truly closed and not as good as the hd800S, I really hope this is not the case especially at just over 1k$ more.

I’d really love to see the charts vs the hd800s.

I mean without having heard it speculation is gonna be there. Hopefully Senn does a review tour and more people get to hear and review it. To me it seems like the goal was to get the hd800 in a closed form factor. Perfectly reasonable goal imo.

I would've thought that a closed HD650 would've been a better place to start for a closed back audiophile Sennheiser. A $1000 extra just for a HD800 that's closed is risky. Do people who want closed really need closed 800 that they are willing to pay that much more for it. Also, If I had an HD800 or S and wanted a closed flagship, I wouldn't want a closed HD800, especially if it sounded the same. I'd want something to complement my HD800, most likely with more bass.

It makes sense to me. The high end team at Sennheiser have a big R&D budget and its basically their job to experiment and solve problems. Grell said in that Japanese interview he started tinkering with the idea in 2012 (although he broke from it for other projects a few times over the years).

You just wouldn't have the R&D budget to try and make an open sounding closed headphone if you were planning to sell it at HD6xx pricing. It wouldn't be worth the investment.

But, as with the HD800 to HD700, they will no doubt trickle down some of these ideas over the next few years.

Yep, and for all the doubters:

"In a word, "sound that does not change from HD 800 S"
So it costs $800 more for the same sound and same treble balance? I was hoping for some sonic improvement (a more natural top end) given the added cost. Hmmm..
