Me and Fraseyboy are OK! Earthquake!
Feb 21, 2011 at 10:28 PM Post #77 of 113
I am OK. Reports of multiple deaths, a few collapsed buildings, particularly in the CBD, some people are still trapped in rumble below office desks that collapsed onto them (and thus why they are still alive due to us being taught as tots to go under desks in an earthquake), lots of liquidfaction, busted water pipes, same errie feeling all over again. Two buses crushed by falling debris. I am in the safest part of of city geographically and geology wise thus why my part of town has not been affected as much.

the ground was shifting a good at 60-90cm (2-3 feet) either way during the big shakes.

recording of the shakes:

Struck at 12:51pm. 6.3, 10km from the city, 5km deep. Multiple shocks of 5.5+.

NZ has very good world leading (with Japan) procedures  for dealing with natural disasters. the ultra strict building codes no doubt saved lives. Multiple rescue and assistance teams to be flown down from around the country. Army will be called in (to be expected as the army base is only 10-15km out of town).

I was almost about to start a new thread about this one. Glad you're ok. Looks a lot worse than the previous one though due to the location of the epicentre.

Ouch... I'd think the city would be more prepared and earthquake-resistant due to that previous quake...

It is but the ground is the issue here and the city's oldest buildings are in the CBD. Earthquake procedures and regulations can only do so much..there's the x-factor.
The ground is the major issue. Chch is a mixture of different ground types due to it's geological past. the CBD and the northeast used to be wetland area before it was cleared in the mid to late 1800's. that building's really the exception though as a similar building in shape and build is fine.

65 confirmed dead now.

The original quake was alright really, just the odd bit of damage and an adrenalin rush. It's so much crappier when people die.

Haven't kept up with the news these last few days so when I saw the earthquake report I just wanted to check this thread to see everyone is OK.
glad no one here got hurt and are safe.
Its sad to read about the high death toll, and steadily climbing.
god help those who are still trapped under the rubble, and condolences to those who have lost their loved ones....

For some reason 2011 has not been a lucky year so far for those of us who call Aust/NZ home..flooding, cyclone, heavy rains, earthquake etc...

Felt this one in Invercargill (600 km away).  Have heard from all of my family - luckily all OK - just property damage (it can be replaced).  Our thoughts are with our friends in CHCH.  Have been following the news.  Can't believe the damage in my old home town.

not being a religious person, the comment was not intended to bring a right wing righteous tone to the thread.
I do wish all the best to rescue workers and friends, family members, citizens etc. in their effort to save and rescue trapped ones.,,,but I think thats half the story, as people trapped under such awful situation will need the strength and determination to keep alive until they are rescued. so they will be needing to dig deep to find this inspiration from within, whether its their belief in god, cosmic power, belief in themselves, their loved ones etc.

whatever it is, I do hope they can hold on until they are rescued.
