MD Sennheiser electrostatic mini-meet

Hopefully his sense of pride, competition, and adventure will egg him on. Think of the excitement among Head-Fi members if he did, and all of the interesting postings that would ensue. Are you listening, Ray?

Best,

The singlepower amp is in Mikhails hands right now,for the new power supply(Blackgated,Piltron transformers) & tweeks to the main amp.
When I get it back I am sure we can set something up.

I hope that we'll eventually see a comparison of Justin's amp., Mikhail's amp., the Stax 007, Peter McAlister's amp., the HEV90, and the Egmont and Egmont Signature amps, and perhaps an amp by Ray, for driving the HE90. Which amps did I omit?

When I asked Mikhail about the synergy of his amp and the Sennheiser electrostatic 'phones, he replied:

"Tom's amp needs to be tuned with the right tubes. The HE90 performs very
well in the right tube configration. The tubes and way it was set-up
durring the last meet was better for the O2's."

Stax T2, KGBH, KGSS, KG all tube ac/dc amp.

With such an abundance of electrostatic headphone amps, I sure hope that manufacturers such as Grado, Sony, and AKG develop their own electrostat headphones. It'll be a real shame if the HE90 remains king of all headphones forever. It's hard to believe that these companies, or others, don't have the technical competence to equal or exceed Sennheiser in this regard.

I have two new electrostatic amplifiers that should be available within
the next 12 months.

KGST Solid state/Tube hybrid with a pair of 6s4a's per channel.

And an all tube fully balanced electrostatic. 3 x 12ax7 and 2 x 6s4 per
channel.

On the subject of pots and step attenuators...

There really is very little available that is quality.
(i'm talking about home units, not portables)

pots:
Alps Black and Blue pots
Alps rk50 (absolutely enormous, won't even fit in the current chassis)
Noble
TKD
Penny & Giles (rather expensive especially in balanced form)

step attenuators:
goldpoint (24 steps)
dact (24 steps)
shalco (huge and very expensive) (48 steps)

And there is going to be a new king on the hill with respect to
electrostatic headphones. Unfortunately i can't say anything about
it at the moment.

I would welcome some good and healthy competition from my dear
friend Ray Samuels.

Here's another design I have bookmarked:

from this website here. I know nothing about the amp, the designer, nor the circuit he shows. Obviously it is designed for the Staxes, and the he does not offer build services (at least that I can see). Just thought I'd mention it for completeness.

Very cool. These guys need an amp to keep them dancing. Is the all tube design influenced in any way by the HEV-90?

An Omega III perhaps??? Maybe the first production model from KG sound labs? Here comes the fun speculation game. Glad to hear at least somebody's keeping the high voltage dream alive.

Heh, do tell more, I need something like that in the near future. Linear or log? Step size? Accuracy? Noise when switching positions?

Amazing Thread for an Amazing Meet!

An amp … and possibly new phones … that may match or even best the absolutely heavenly HE90/HEV90 pairing is both astonishing and mouth-wateringly tantalizing.

It's been an exciting read!
