M50s overrated?

The AT ATH M50s represent a terrific value and are in no way over-rated. There are certainly better headphones, but you would have to pay more than $200 to get them.  In my opinion, for the price the M50s blow away all competitors.

For the price a year ago, M50's blow away most competitors.

Fixed that for you.

Now M50's are >$150, and there are a great many new headphones from different brands in that price range that challenge, and in some cases exceed, the sound quality of M50's.

Just came back from a long walk with mine, slightly under the weather here today in Melbourne.

It's just so obvious ~ they have no business whatsoever even pretending to be anywhere near
as transparent, clear, detailed and natural as my SR80i's.

That said, at least I can throw them with confidence through a mulcher and be guaranteed that they'll
still be in one piece afterwards

Then how on Earth can you say the 750s are better?

From people who have compared them side by side and have owned both. I look at the frequency response graphs as well and the shure looks like it measures better. Also the srh750dj can be had for $100 nowadays. Unless you live in the united states expect to pay $200 or more for m50s. Hardly a bargain.

Jumping to conclusions already? Tsk tsk bcasey.

Have you heard the srh840 by any chance? I find the srh750dj to be the srh840s with sub bass. Since the common consensus is that the srh840 is better then the m50s i would think to people who like bass the srh750dj would be even more impressive. I wasn't stating it will be mind blowingly better i am stating value wise it's better. Especially if you live outside the usa.

Yeah I've heard the 840. When I bought my M50 it had, as you said, better value than the more-expensive SRH840. The SRH840 definitely perform better technical-wise, and now that Audio Technica jacked up the price of their M50, I would very much rather buy the 840 instead. Of course, that's in current times.

And no, I don't feel that the 750DJ is at the same league as the SRH840. But given that it is definitely cheaper than the M50 now, it is of a better value, but performance-wise I would say it is slightly below the level of the M50's detail pickup.

I don't know why they sound nearly identical to me. Only difference is the sub bass on the srh750dj.

That still quite silly to assume the 750s are better without hearing both side by side and using frequency response curves to infer which is technically superior? I don't think that's sound logic at all but maybe that's just me.

I have both 750DJ and M50s available for test listening (720DJs are my roommate's), both are broken in with thousands of hours. I'm listening through FLAC -> Foobar2k -> wasapi -> FiiO E7 DAC -> headphone.

All I can say is: 750DJs have worse bass, better mids (not the best), slightly "unnatural" highs. M50's have better (with my modding) bass, worse mids, grainier but more natural highs.

Basically neither of them is better than the other.

Probably because your E7 will choke resolution and sub optimally drive most halfway decent phones.

I take it you think the fiio e7 is crap? Every source i have tried them on (ipod classic, iphone 4, fiio e7, realtek audio, etc) all give me nearly the same results. I only use the fiio e7 because it makes my headphones louder. I hear no major improvement.

Edit:

After approximately 10 hours worth of burn in, the bass is really starting to show up in these things. At first, they were a bit lighter than I expected and less punchy too. Now I can start to tell where it is supposed to be at in it's fully bloomed sound or rather where it is working its way too. Keep pushing on little drivers, you can do it!
