Hey all,

Initially I was set to purchase Denon D1100 but was turned off by its new design (Would have been great with the D1001 and D2000 style). The original plan was to top up to get the D2000 but I heard that the bass on D1100 is great (which makes me wonder if topping up for a better looking headphone is worth the money for the lesser amount of bass).

Currently looking at two other models, namely the M50 and HFI-580. If I'm not wrong, all these models are closed-back headphones which is the kind I'm looking for as I take public transport and frequent the library.

D1100, M50 and HFI-580 are priced similarly in my place and I'm wondering if the M50 or the HFI-580 has the audio performance that D1100 offers (or even so, the D2000).

So here are my requirements.
1) must has a closed-back design.
2) Similar amount of bass as the D1100.
3) Similar price range as the D1100.
4) Better looking than the D1100 (Subjective I know.....)

Currently owning the Senn. PXC 450 (unamped), and would like to upgrade to something richer in bass. Would be pairing these cans with the Fiio E7 and possibly the E9 as well.

Thanks all

I don't think such headphone exists unfortunately, closest one comes the D1100 itself if you can overcome the looks (I don't know what you got against it though) for me it's an improvement over D1001 but for me comfort & form-factor is what matters, not how it looks like, not to mention the superlow weight of only 189g for a headphone containing 50mm drivers is an excellent feature if you ask me!

EDIT: Well there's DT770 Pro but if that's better looking to you I don't know. I think it's also slightly less bassy or at least the bass is far different compared to D1100's bass. DT770's bass is slightly on the boomier side but maybe one of the versions could be less boomy than the DT770 Pro/80 I head, check out the other threads about the different versions of DT770 (250, 600 ohm etc) for more info. But one of them contains bassports which would also cause some leaking I suppose but it's also the bassiest of them all.

M50 would fit all those categories except for bass, HFI-580 while maybe slightly bassier than M50, wouldn't bet on it that it's at D1100 levels.

Get the Creative Aurvana Live.  It's the D1001 with a different earcup shape.  Everything else is pretty much the same.

Without having listened to the D1100, I can tell you that both the 580 and M50 were "better" than the D1001, and I don't believe that the D1100 has improved that much over the D1001, based on how they both are reviewed against the D2000.

Thanks all who replied!

Guess I'll audition the M50 and D1100 at my local store then.

What I dislike about D1100's design is that the sides are "poking" out of the headband which was deemed unsightly to me

Yeah i definitely recommend AT M50's. Recently ordered them and they're great with bass and detailed sound especially for the price. Great noise reduction also

Yes. The D1100's frame sticking out makes my head look wider and like a football head. And lucky you for being able to demo them both at a local store! I couldn't demo either.

I thought the HFI 580s were the better headphones. The M50s were more balanced if you're into that. The HFI 580s are no doubt, more exciting and energetic

BTW the 580s can get ALOT bassier than the M50s. NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a little.  A LOTOTOTOTOT bassier. it may require using EQ to bring it out, but it is several times more impactful. the most impactful short of the XB700 that i have heard.  im not sure about the Denon d1100, but it most definitely more impactful than the D7000.
