Lyr 3 - The new Coherence™ and Continuity™ hybrid amplifier from Schiit - Impression & discussion thread

My Lyr3 or myself has killed 3 pairs of hp's. 😥 I had my grado RS-1's plugged in yesterday and started up the amplifier after doing a tube swap and I heard a loud pop. I could actually smell the burnt drivers. 😩 my other low impedance headphones Denon D5000 and ML Mikros 90 must have met the same fate as them.

My guess is that the relay mute design must be flawed and fails to operate at times. I will never leave a pair of HP'S plugged in again. An expensive lesson learned. 😪

Does anyone here have any knowledge of known issues with the LYR 3 killing HP's or is this just operator error on my part?
Please contact tech support immediately so we can help you.

Schiits response.

Thank you for the update. We can take a look at it for you. We can offer out-of-warranty service on a second-hand unit. You can start that process at schiit.com/contact/service

And nothing for you. I assume that is regular after warranty service and tough nuts on the headphones.
Brutal, but understandable if the amp is used or out of warranty.

I would have been out after one set.

Does anyone have any experience with using the Lyr3 as a tube preamp? If so, what were the results?
I really like the tube sound of the Lyr3. I don't believe it can do damage to my headphones being used as a preamp as opposed to powering my hps with it. Any opinions or recommendations on my intentions for use? This would be supplying a LP RS 08 a signal. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Lyr 3s don’t routinely destroy anything, as @Ripper2860 has already pointed out. If you have an early one and/or picked it up used, contact Schiit with your S/N. And it’s a great sounding pre.

I like mine! I’m not that guy who sits around listening for the sound stage to get 3” deeper. I use my Lyr through a single Vidar or a rebuilt 1960 Magnavox tube amp. Speakers are1983 Klipsch Heresy’s or much newer Klipsch RP600m’s. I’ve used both power amps and both speakers in all combinations. I’m currently using a Saga because of the remote control, but the Lyr could go back in anytime. I cannot say either the Lyr or the Saga is a clear improvement over the other.

Update..... Well, my final outcome with Schiit repair services was not very good at all. My Lyr3 has a defective board and can't be repaired.
They don't have any replacement boards. So, in the end, I'm out of an amplifier and three good pairs of headphones. Not a very good experience owning this amplifier.
I don't think I could trust another piece Schiit gear again.

Sent u a PM.

I have never heard of any Lyr 3 damaging headphones.

For you to damage 3 sets of headphones is well really "odd".

Did the prior owner, u said its used, indicate any issues with the amp?

DId it work with you for a period? If so how long?

Putting a new tube when its OFF and turning it on....???
A pop...wonder if the tube you put in had a dead short etc.

I have had amps burn up grid resistors for things like this...it wasnt the amp it was the tube.

Nothing is perfect, but for the most part Lyrs have been around for a looooong time...

If its out of warranty all Schiit could do IMO is offer what they offered you.

If that board is not fixable and there are no spares for a product they dont make anymore...well
that sucks indeed. But its what it is.

Good Luck...

Does anyone get a slight electric shock when turning off and on?

Nope!

Something somewhere internally is probably shorting out. Definitely should send it in to Schiit to have it checked out.
