Does anyone know why this happens? I have a Lyr 3 with a Analog Devices chip Multi-Bit DAC card and the unit "clicks" whenever it starts / stops playback. Btw I don't mean the startup click where it powers on.

As answered already, it clicks when changing the bit rate. It's muting the sound quickly while it does that internally...that is my understanding.
From the manual:
Just updated my Lyr 3 with a VT231 Hytron 6SN7 and a Biftost 2/64. Loving it. Grado RS1X... volume knob stays around 8, maybe 9 o'clock MUCH better than the internal multibit card in the Lyr...

Would love to hear your thoughts on the differences/improvements you've noticed between the onboard multibit DAC in Lyr 3 vs. Bifrost 2/64? I have the onboard ES9028, which is likely different from the MB card, but still very curious how considerable the changes were in your experience.
It turned out to be the S.M.S.L. M400 DAC(!) after all.
Swapped in the Hidizs S9 AKM and the right channel is just fine with all the headphones, wires, amps on hand.
This little dongle really kicks! I actually like the bass response from it better than the bass from the SMSL.
Another DAC should be here by Wednesday.
(What to do with the M400?)
Odd.
Broke everything down, reinserted the M400 and everything is sounding fine again(?).
Don't know what happened--but I'll take it!
[The M400 IS a nice AKM chip DAC. It pairs very well with the SP400 and really grooves with the PRO 780i.]
