Sorry guys, late to the thread. Save me the scrolling… is the only difference between the W4 and W4 EX the larger amp in the former? Buying for the FiR RN6, so I don’t need the extra power, if so.

Anyone listened to the W4 and the iFi GOld bar?

The main differences between the W4 and the W4EX are as follows: The W4 and the W4EX use different chips, with the W4 using the 5108 and the W4EX using the 5108EX. Thus W4 has slightly better dynamic range and THD+N than the W4EX, and the balanced headphone output power of the W4 is 420mW compared to the 220mW of the W4EX. Additionally, the W4EX has lower power consumption than the W4. In terms of features (like EQ, filter, tune, etc.), they are identical.

Personally, my opinion is that there is no other chip in the form of 5108EX. it would not be economically profitable, in this particular case.
Therefore, they simply turn off some hardware blocks of this chip. this can also be done at the firmware level, since they assigned different HW IDs in any case.
This is not surprising, because it costs the manufacturer significantly cheaper than producing two different chips. it is very difficult and expensive since 5108 this is not an ordinary converter.
Another question is what to do with it, alas, nothing))) no one will do this to remove the limitation in the firmware, then it would be possible to buy EX and get all the advantages of the older version. but perhaps there will be such an enthusiast.

I honestly think that the W1 was closer to the W2 than the W4EX to the W4... starting with the power (balanced) which for the W4 is almost double. Even the gap in terms of measurements would seem to be more evident. Instead for the price there was more difference between W1 and W2 than between W4EX and W4. It practically doesn't make sense for me to save just over 100 euros and be left with the doubt that I was wrong. When I chose the W1 and not the W2, I did it mainly for the battery consumption of the smartphone ... now I don't see the need.

if we want to say it all ... of my dongles what I love most is the one that measures the worst ... RU6

Meanwhile, little brother W1 can't wait to meet big brother W4... I'm curious to hear it with the IER-Z1Rs that were already a show with the W1 and their preset...
Let's just hope they add more presets... like Mest MKII and Jewel to name two (which I have) lol

+1
The IER-Z1R sounds great on the W4. I’m hoping for an A8000 EQ preset in the near future. Sounds excellent without it but I’m curious to see how they would tune it.

It’s very difficult to judge dongles based on numbers. The Questyle m15 looks like a turd on paper until you hear it.

Last I recalled, M15 measurement isn't actually 'like a turd' at all. The only bad number that M15 has is it's output power, which IIRC is < 15mW @ 32 ohm. While output power is important factor on how well it can drive headphone, it is not an easily noticeably quality for most unless you have really good / trained ears.

For R-2R devices, which never really produce great measurement number, I would consider RU6 to be decent. It is not good compared to Sigma-Delta DAC, but far from the worst even in the USB dongle world.

Has anyone tried these popular L&P WP1/2 cables? Are they really valid, or can you buy a good cable and be comfortable without spending 3/4 times its price? Thank you.

W4 Tuning Diaries

02 Exploring tuning presets (1)

The main components of tuning W4 can be summarized as: L&P tune, digital filters, EQ, and SDF.

After a long time of combination and pairing, I have summarized four sets of tuning combinations:

Tune1 + NOS: The sound is naturally soft, smooth and relaxed, but not lacking in resolution. It's a great interpretation of the analog sound.
