Hello,

I was wondering if there any good alternatives to the M40x' especially within the AudioTechnica line. I'm looking for a slightly V-shaped if not a neutral or mid-centric pair of closed back headphones with good soundstage.

I have been interested in the A series, specifically the ATH-A550z or ATH-A990z because I've heard they have very a good soundstage.

However, I've also been interested in the MSR7s but I don't know how they would compare to the M40x and the A550z or A990z.

I would like some advice in regards to my decision. Suggestions from companies that are not Audio-Technica is also welcome.

You might also look into a DT770, since you are looking at v-shaped signatures. Some people find it to be a bit strident on top (as for the MSR7 as well), but this may not bother you given your interest in the v-shaped curve. For a closed headphone, the stage is pretty good on the 770. Worth a look-see.

I have not heard the A550z or A990z--sorry. I do like the A900x, though.

I think the Beyerdynamics might be a bit too V-shaped for me. Again, I only said a slight V-shape sound signature - like the M40x. Neutral or mid-centric are pretty good as well.

What about the A900x? How are the mids on those? How would they compare to the M40x or the MSR7s?

In my book the A900x has more forward mids than either the M40x or MSR7, but that's just me and YMMV.

I would have no problem recommending the ATH-A990Z.

I'm actually thinking about getting the ATH-A550z right now. As for the ATH-A990z, how would they compare to the M40x in terms of sound signature?
I own the Audio Technica ATH-AD700, ATH-A900X, ATH-WS99, ATH-ESW9, ATH-W1000X headphones.
I've listened to the ATH-M50X (bassier version of the M40X).
I would try and talk you into spending the extra cash for the A990Z, over the A550Z, no so much for FPS gaming, but for better audio quality.

I heard the A550z is more neutral than the A990z. That got a me a bit interested in those over the A990z. What do you think?
