Looking for First Audiophile Headphones -- <$60
Nov 25, 2010 at 11:50 PM Post #16 of 28
If the OP's budget was a bit more I would recommend the Superlux HD668B, with a bit of burn-in they sound very nice and are pretty well built with removable cables making a cable upgrade very easy to do. I bought a pair in Canada from Paws for $59.95 but he would have shipping on top of that. They are now my go to headphone for full size. But they may be a bit hard to drive without a small amp...

Also is the OP wanting portability??

Post a link? I can't find a place to possibly buy the HD668B.

OP uses a Sansa Fuse - so apparently also wants something for portable use. I also have a Fuse and find it fairly under powering - but I'm guessing it would work OK with earbuds.

Here you go, they had fast service when I bought my pair.  PAW Music

I had a Fuse and found it a bit under powering as well.

I thought the Koss were a bit hard to drive as well but have to admit I haven't owned them so can't speak from experience. In the price range the OP is looking at I strongly recommend he look at |Joker| thread on portable headphones located here, it's to bad he wasn't in the portable forum a couple days ago. There was a post about Musicians Friend clearing out some AKG K430's for $29.95. I ordered a pair figuring they should be easy to resell if I don't like their sound aince they retail for over $100. The last pair of portable AKG's I owned were easily driven by portable rigs.

OK, thanks for the link. I will put the HD668B on my short list - would cost me ~$100 with replacement pads. Just bought a used SRH750DJ so I'm waiting to see how it does.

FWIR, the UR55 does well without additional amplification - like from a computer. And then throw in free $30 earbuds for the Fuse. Both for ~$60 shipped - use coupon code TURKEY10.

@1Time, I am getting some AKG K240 velour pads for the Superlux from a local store for $20 which I hear make them more comfortable and improve the sound.

Strangely I've found the velour pads for the k240 to not change the sound, at least with my k240. They may for the Superlux. Somehow I actually feel that the old plastic pads are more comfortable.

I was expecting better bass, but didn't see any changes. Luckily you found them for $20, so it's worth a try.

Koss UR-55 is easily driven by anything and this is why I like it. The only thing to my ears that can compete with it in sound quality when fully modded under $80 unamped is the modded Grado SR-60.
The Grado SR-60 would lose out on comfort, imaging, bass and soundstage though. Level of detail is about the same. I have a modded SR-80 and there's not any huge differences between the modded SR-80 and modded UR-55. The sound coming from the SR-80 is slightly more clear, but for a $100 headphones that's to be expected.

Unfortunately the Maxell DHP-II has better sound than the un-modded UR-55!

EDIT: Forgot about Creative Aurvana Live. That could be some seriously competition for the modded UR-55. I'd like to compare the two. CAL is $70-$80 now though.

I got tdockweiler's opinion on them but what do other think of these Sennheisers? http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD515-Dynamic-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B0001FTVDG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291102944&sr=8-1

After reading that guide by |joker| I think I'm going to go with these:

Opinions?

Don't do it! Seriously you should consider the Maxell DHP-II before them. The sound is just so much better. BTW I've found you can use the DHP-II earpads on the DT-235! It's a pretty interesting combination.

Despite missing that sale you should still consider the Koss UR-55 as long as you're willing to do the super easy mod. After the mod, nothing under $75 can compare to them. Maybe the Creative Aruvana Live. Not even the SRH-440.
