I am currently looking for a high quality set of Over-the-ear headphones mainly for gaming on my PC/PS3/listening to mp3s/movies on my notebook/home theater and also some iPod use.

I initially saw the Sennheiser HD 650s but saw that they require an amp. I am looking for the best headphones that dont require an amp. my budget is around 300-350 max.

Ive noticed the Sennheiser HD 595s and AKG K 272HDs but am looking for some input from you guys since I have little knowledge on headphones/audio THX

Senn HD-595 are great un-amped cans (but), sound better with a little juice behind them. That's just my opinion. I've tried most major headphone companies, and not that I've tried the best of the best, I find Ultrasones to be easy to drive. My iPod can run them, and my HPDAC makes them amazing.

It all depends. Do you want something portable? Open? Closed? What do you listen to?

I listen to mostly rock and some rap and techno mixed in there too. As far as open or closed I was told that if i was listening to anything in public closed was necessary but like I said I dont know much when it comes to this.

I'll mostly use them for PC gaming or to plug into my Home Theater Receiver to either watch blurays or play ps3/360 games late at night. occasionally id like to take them out with me for either road trips or if I go to a casino in a poker room.

I'd say you should check into the Audio Technica M50's. They sound good out of an Ipod and have a lot of bass, if a tad too much. The comfort and fit is not too bad and is a step up from the Shure SRH-840 which sounds way better in every way, but those fatigue my ears too fast. I also have problems suggesting the 840's over the Audio Technica M50 due to the poor fit.

I actually now prefer the Koss UR-55 over the M50's. I like the bass much better and they are extremely comfortable. They're very light and the earpads go over my ears. They look as if the foam would be scratchy, but it's really comfortable. They're dirt cheap and only $40-$50. Right now they're a bit hard to find, which is disappointing.

Some may not like the sound, but I do.They are not a bright headphone, but for me this makes it so that I can listen to them for very long periods of time. This is also a very good headphone for rock music such as Pearl Jam.

To my ears it's hard to believe this is a $50 headphone. I've tried some $150 headphones that didn't sound as good (AKG 240 MK II) if you can believe that.

Shure SRH750DJ

I agree, w/the dbi Pro-705 & Sony MDR-V900HD's coming in second and third respectively. The dbi-Pro-700's need a wee bit of amping IMO, or a more powerful HP out than my Sony S639 7 touch 3Gs provide.

I will say that build quality wise, the dbi Pro's are KING, and the V900HD's are darn good as well. The SRH750DJ's, the build quality is a bit "iffy", mine are w/Shure ATM for repair (the adjustment arm cracked w/me using them normally - and I baby my equipment).

From the description of the type of headphones that you are seeking I would probably try the Beyerdynamic DT-990 32 ohm. The DT-990's are great for movies and gaming. The 32 ohm are FWIR just a little behind the 600 ohm version as far as SQ goes but still very close. The best price I've seen lately is on Amazon.com for $265 US shipped. Try to keep you updated if I see a better price. Happy hunting. Happy Listening.

K thx everyone ive narrowed it down to the Audio Technica M50s($120) or the Beyerdynamic DT990 32ohm version ($265)

Was wondering since the M50 is closed and the DT990 is open how much of a difference it really is? they will mainly be used in my room and only occasionally out in the public with me. both are 32ohms like everyone suggested for an ipod but is the $140 difference on amazon really a big quality difference to want the DT990 over the M50?

Try to find hps around 35 Ohm, like the GMP 8.35/435, or the M-50.

Waking up old therad.  Sorry, doing some research.

I have hte M50s.  There is no way they sound nearly as good unamped.  My friends $50 amp is an improvement.
