London Head-Fi Meet April 2013
Apr 28, 2013 at 4:30 AM Post #31 of 134
A very  enjoyable day.  Thanks so much to GSARider for organising it and to Sennheiser for allowing it to happen in such a nice environment.   The lunch was very gratefully received, and the hotel staff played a part to make it so pleasant.

Thanks to the Sennheiser team for bringing the Orpheus (and the other kit.)  The opportunity to hear this lovely stat system was a treat.  And to Axel Grell for coming to meet with us. The HD800 sounded also very good.  In both cases I would like to have chance to listen with more challenging music.

It was great to meet up with pals from previous meets and to make new friends.

Particularly good to meet shipsupt and hear just some of his wonderful  kit, and Mr Q with HE-6 and Hifiman amp sounding splendid.

Great day - well done all round!

I've discussed with a few folk to do something into Winter - around November time and I promise name badges this time...

It's open to sponsorship at the moment, however I will give Sennheiser first refusal as they were kind enough to splash out the cash for this one and I think the event struck the right note without being over-commercialised.

Hey guys, just wanted to say I had a great time. I'm especially glad I got to try out the Sennheiser High-End Orpheus, HD-800, LCD-2, HiFiMAN flagship EF-6 & HE-6, Stax and many, many..... more! Thanks to Frank for bringing in, his beautiful looks in touch and sounding headphone cables and many thanks to GSARider for making this happen, without him, we're all sitting at home wondering how stuff sounds.

A massive thanks to all who organised and sponsored this, I think it was an enormous success.

Met with some lovely people, this kind of event reconfirms my faith in humanity - even though my DT1350s broke mid listen! (cable detatched I think, in right speaker, I'm hoping Polar Audio will fix them as 5 months old)

Chatted with Jude, what a truly likeable man, made his time to talk to everyone and managed to even look interested! , a great figurehead for this mini revolution in listening to music
Spoke with loads of very friendly enthusiastic people, with special praise for Hisoundaudio UK, he has a tough job at the moment, and he is exactly the type of person to support.

Glad to be non-impressed with Orpheus, and HD800 was for me perfect, it wasn't the ideal place to listen to open ears but the quality shone through.
Some tables weren't as approachable as others, it was hard to tell at time who was running a commercial stall and who was just having a listen to their own stuff.
Roll on the next one, hopefully we can have a headphone surgeon there next time who can recable on the spot!

Congratulations to all,

This was a very 'amateur' show, in the right way (as in, the way the Olympics used and ought to be), but it's also great that the good spirit extends to not killing and eating the professionals who also attended. Friendly and impassioned is a good way to do these things.

For the record, the stench of the professional is impossible to remove, and here's my bit: http://www.hifiplus.com/articles/head-fi-london-meet-2013/

The great thing about this for me is the feeling of being completely and utterly out of my depth in a section of a business I've been involved with for decades. I know for some journos that's an admission they could never make, but it's sometimes great to feel like a stranger in a strange land.

Here's to the next one!

QUICK NOTE: This meet impressions thread was originally started by GSARider, but I merged KT66's meet impressions into this one. Because KT66's thread was started just a bit earlier than GSARider's, KT66's post appears first in this merged thread. I just wanted to clear up any confusion.

I'll post my photos and more when I've got real bandwidth at home (as opposed to my mobile).

For now, I wanted to thank GSARider, Sennheiser, and everyone who attended. Though I'm obviously not one of the London regulars, you all made me feel like one. This was an awesome event!

Highlights for me:
  1. Listening to the awesome STAX Sigma
  2. Listening to the Ed9 and finally able to get what it sounds like.
  3. Awesome after meet meal.
  4. Listening to Orpheus and not impressed, may be if they let me play "Nyan Cat" on it.
  5. Most importantly, excellent time chatting with everyone at the meet.

I'd also like to add my own huge thanks to Nadeem and Sennheiser for a great meet, and extend it to all of the people who brought along your rigs and patiently let me listen to them.

This was the first time I've been to a meet, and I didn't really know what to expect. Walking into the posh venue with a little trepidation, I quickly realised what an enthusiastic, friendly and sociable bunch make up the Head-Fi community, and I immediately felt comfortable.

It really was great to get to the opportunity to listen to and see some of the amazing equipment that I read about here, as well as speak to the owners who without exception turned out to be very switched-on and great to talk to. I got to hear some truly great setups, including getting good impressions of 'phones that I'm considering purchasing in future, in addition to adding some previously unconsidered candidates to the list (Welcome to Head-fi, sorry ... etc).

That was a great day out!

I'd like to add my congratulations to Nadeem for achieving the right balance between commercialism and maintaining the true ethos of an enthusiasts event.

Though I regrettably couldn't attend due to family commitments it was undoubtedly a truly splendid day!

Cheers,

P.S. PLEASE add more gear impressions and photo's to this thread!

Did anyone else have a listen to the IE800's? What were your thoughts?

Yes, I spent about 10 mins with them hooked up to my dx100. Got to admit to being quite impressed. I switched to my k3003 straight after and felt like I was home but not a fair comparison at all, familiar tips and sound etc. I plan to demo the ie800 further as they sounded very nice.

IE800 had a really sweet mid and very well textured bass with great extension, everything is coherent. One of the best universal out there, I found they sound more refined than the K3003 but with the treble somewhat bright for me. Rather impressed what they archived with a single dynamic driver.
