MBL 1621A Red Book Transport $24,000
MBL 1611F DAC W/USB $24,750
TARA Omega Gold Digital Cable $8,900 (as the digital cable is an integral part of a two-piece digital source)

A treat to use, eye candy to look at, amazing to listen to.

Dinan,

A quite impressive set-up. It's apparent no expense was spared for your front end.

How would you describe the sound signature of the MBL digital gear, e.g., does it tend towards the analytical side, more towards the warmer side or somewhere in the middle? I don't know if you had a chance to hear the Accuphase or the Esoteric players during your search, but if so, I would like to hear your thoughts on them.

Audio Unlimited in Denver has picked up MBL and I hope to hear the gear at RMAF. At some point, if my income ever returns to pre-recessionary levels, I will upgrade my front end and am considering the MBL 1511 and 1531 or the Accuphase 700.

I've just bought a 230v version DAS-R1 with mods.

The unit was £2500 in 1989 and the mods are rated at a cost of £2200 by the seller. It's been upgraded from the Single Crown to the Double Crown version of the TDA1541A S1 DAC chips as part of that.

The £ is in the ****ter against the $ atm, but I'll let you convert as you like.

Very cool, Duggeh.

I forgot to add that I have an Esoteric D-70, which listed at $6,500.

I haven't yet seen your Esoteric against North Star and co notes. I look forward greatly to reading them.

I also regret that I didn't banter with you to a greater sufficiency last week.

That is one sick source (DAS-R1)!

I've enjoyed my stock unit for about a year so if this modded unit can up the ante a little that'd be great.

The stock unit has 2 of the single crown DAC chips. This one has the double crowns (rare as hens teeth and monstrously expensive now).

Insofar as I've read, only 6 players had the 2 crown chips in them, and only one had two of them:

Marantz CD-12
Marantz CD7
Marantz Project D-1 [ which has the dual chips ]
Meridian 207
Philips LHH1000
Studer A730

At least 30 really high end units had the single crown chip (the stock chip had no crowns), but much less of those had 2 of them.

Damn you Sony, and your appropriate price levels! Now I won't get into the high-end source owner list

I guess then the last two days I had the D-1 to listen with I should count as quite special.
