LG G3 as a portable source?

Alright, here are the results.
With my RHA 750s, they sound fine as far as I can tell, however my luck did not fare to well with other headphones. My Audio Technica CK 55s were given an awful hiss in the left channel at any volume lower than a few notches from max. My Sony MDR7506 were given the same thing in the right channel for god knows why...

there is no LG official solution to the "awful hiss in the left channel" issue till now !

can't understand why such a huge South Korean company won't cope with this.

anyway, people have their tricky ways to handle it XD

i hate LG

The solution is to return the G3 and get one that is working. It's a hardware problem.

Edit: Hunde, did you get the G3 used or refurbished from an auction site perhaps? If so, return it if you can. You got a lemon. And the G3 has been out since last July. It's not a new model and the only reason to get one now is because it's heavily discounted. There are better options out there or coming out soon. You may not like LG but they are on the rise - at the expense mostly of Samsung. LG makes some very good gear. But it's just a phone. I'll get whatever is the best thing I can find - regardless of brand - when it's time to get a new phone.

It is true that this phone is great, except the audio playback through the wired headset.

I bought a brand new one from a local shop rather than online shop or auction or second-handed or so.

The production year is 2015, i.e., it should be flaw free for the known issues. However, this known issue persists.

"No complain no maintain." What kind of manufacturer LG is?

I did not really hate the wonderful phones manufacturer, but the services that LG provided.

Anyway, thank you all!

I wouldn't categorize it as a widespread issue. But that doesn't help if you have the problem. Why not take it back and get a different model of phone? Get something you really like. There is so much to choose from!

As some posts have mentioned before, there are many tricky ways to handle it. Besides, audio playback is not the main function for me and in fact, I usually bring two smartphones on the go. so it never  be a serious problem, and most important is that LG G3 is great in the rest.

Is it a widespread issue? It depends on what tests we have done. Without any treatment, the hiss is quite notable. But in anyway, the hiss will come out in deep base (=<50Hz), especially with strong base in-ear headphones. I think it is not so normal for all users.

You wrote: "awful hiss in the left channel" - not normal or acceptable. Some people here think the G3 is bright sounding - but hiss on one channel - hardware issue that can't be fixed with software tweaks.  These days my G3 is the primary sound source and I'm very satisfied with the SQ. But YMMV. Good luck!

If you are experiencing issues with hissing/cracking/popping in left earphone you should check out this one:

It worked perfectly for me!

Even though relatively speaking I've been burned by LG, and am looking to replace the G3 with either the HTC M9 or Samsung S6 Edge, and, whilst completely off-topic, have to say not all LG products are bad - last week I picked up one of their 31MU97 monitors for my desktop PC - couldn't be happier :)

...As their slogan goes, "Life's good" :)

i'd be very interested to know if anyone is using the new lg g4 as an audio source and if so (a) how loud is the headphone output? and (b) how does it sound as player? i birefly owned the lg g2, which had its virtues but had very low sound output, which made calls and music difficult to hear

It's not out for like another month...at least mainstream.  Gonna be a while before you get this feedback.

I'm planning on getting the G4 as soon as it comes out regardless of the sound quality, I'll be sure to report back ASAP. Headphones I'll be using for testing will most likely be Noble 4 Universals and AKG K553 Pros.

For anyone interested in using the G3 as a source, I just wanna chime in and say that the G3 has replaced my Fiio X5. I really can't quite tell if there's a difference in sound quality between the 2. I want to say the X5 sounds a bit better, but I think that's only because I know the X5 is a dedicated DAP and so it *should* sound better. But from my personal experience, The G3 sounds fantastic.

One thing to note, however, Is that the G3 is louder with the stock player, but it is impossible to get a flat frequency response (the stock eq sucks). The graph isn't set to be linear, but instead to exaggerate the differences a bit. Still, I don't think a 0.4dB difference between 30 and 16kHz is too bad.

However, by using Poweramp instead of the stock music app, and adjusting the equalizer a bit, it can achieve a much flatter response. With tweaking the eq a bit, I was able to get around a 0.1dB difference between 30 and 16kHz (note, this is the response you would get when headphones are plugged in directly.)

I then connected my E12 amp. Some more eq tweaking and I got a pretty similar response, albeit a little more bass

So while I wasn't able to get the response quite as flat (but still around a 0.1dB difference between 30 and 16kHz), I must say that it does sound better with the E12...I'm not hearing sibilance as I do with the G3 amp

Thanks for the informative post, and for the quoted text above - goes to prove I'm not the only person who feels this way :)
