Lets Talk Metal

Artists do change. Funny too at times they have to trash anything they did for the last 10 years. You actually hear of artists burning all their paintings. So he has moved on. I don't really care what he calls his band. That's the thing too as even though he had help onstage Xasthur was always promoted as a solo thing, now he has two other band members. Xasthur is a three piece band now?

One of those "Bloodstained Mirrors Demo CRDs" was in a black paper sleeve and hand sealed with black hot wax! Actually I think my remaster is the one you have that came as double disk. It's the only one with a color cover from what I can tell.

As for me, I'd like to keep my own art as separate projects depending on the type of music it is. Just imagine if a pop singer came out with an extreme metal album. It wouldn't make sense for them to release it under the same name, in my opinion.

Both of the reissue CD versions I got had color covers. I also have the double vinyl version with exclusive bonus content, as well as the tape version which also has exclusive content. You can read about all the different versions by going to the album on Metal Archives and clicking the other versions tab.

For reference, here is a complete list of all the Xasthur stuff I got.

Fun fact: The correct pronunciation is "zas-tur"!

The new Xasthur has a new band logo too. You can get a shirt of it. Haha

So at some point we may see a new encyclopedia page with the new band and logo? But the album is called Subject To Change. It may change. I do remember in all those interviews where he stated that he was upset with the music business, he said he always lost out, was never really paid for the Black One project. How it was hard to make money. The only thing he was jazzed about was this new bass he just purchased which he thought was really going to improve his solo work sound.

The thing is, he is truly a depressed artist. How could someone not be emotionally twisted to make his music, it is the real deal? His black metal was what was inside and how he felt at the time. So if he wants to wear a Mexican scarf around his face now and play experiments of acoustically tainted music, just let him, it is the poor guys therapist. IMO

Metal Archives has a new policy of not adding non-metal bands. There are a number of non-metal bands that were added because they were closely related to certain metal bands, but this practice has pretty much been stopped.

And yeah, BM isn't exactly the type of thing you get into to get rich. Even the most popular artists in the genre only make average incomes from it at best. And plenty of artists in any genre get screwed over by labels. Some even end up owing money to them instead of getting paid anything!

I'd be happy for them that they're playing the music they like, they don't owe me anything.

Also if he calls it something else, he loses a ton of listeners who may like his music but don't keep up with the metal community/news and aren't aware of the changes. He is Xasthur, that's his artist persona and he shouldn't have to lose out on money and listeners because he changed his style.

Fair enough. Just know that Metal Archives is treating it as a separate project now even though it's under the same name.

Telepathic with the Deceased is my favorite album by him. I like the experimental aspect. It is an experience loud on big speakers too, an emersion experience. Bet the vinyl sounds great!

Must be a reprint as they only made 999 of your edition.

I just want a vinyl copy of that Xasthur/Leviathan split, it's so good! I just preordered the new Inter Arma and Withered albums on vinyl though, really excited for both of those.

Finally began listening to the new Abyssal and would be surprised if that wasn't on my year-end list, it's phenomenal! Really been liking the latest Zhrine album as well, got it on a nice red vinyl. Sadly the other album that came with it was warped and unplayable, will not purchase any vinyl from Season of Mist again. Going to use it to practice methods of fixing warped records though, should be fun.

The later Leviathan songs are the stronger section of the EP, IMO.

So are you listening to the 2013 Abyssal also? I'm really getting into that, just the buzzy guitar and atmosphere. They create atmosphere is bunches. Lol

Love the Zhrine release too. We have the same taste!

Sick of metal for the moment. (I more or less listen to metal for hours each day and it eventually loses all the normal effects and becomes desensitizing.)

Listening to the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Original Soundtrack now. A truly great CGI film and soundtrack! Definitely worth seeing and hearing. I'll share a few of the metal tracks, though some of the tracks in other styles are better in my opinion.

mm, it's one of his best for sure, particularly the title track.

I love this lyric: "Fragments of failure, some said it was art, for it only bears a meaning when all life is torn apart."

If you look at the other versions tab for the album, you can see that it was released on CD and vinyl in 2004, then reissued on tape and vinyl in 2013. I got both 2004 versions. The original vinyl release was limited to 999 and the reissue was limited to 830. As far as I know, there is only one CD version, which is not limited.

I just looked and my collection is very small in comparison. I have all full LPs till 2007 except "To Violate The Oblivious" Also I only have one EP. Haha Love my stuff though.

There are gems scattered throughout his discography. Try downloading the rest or something.

To Violate The Oblivious is in my top three Xasthur albums! If you haven't yet heard it, don't miss it. I got the remastered version released by Moribund Records with a bonus track. The original version (which I have also heard) sounds less aggressive.

I believe you said you didn't bother listening to some of his later albums. Portal Of Sorrow has some great material as well, such as this:

Yeah, that split was the first time I heard either band.

I'm jealous of all you guys getting to hear so much new stuff. My home Internet with no data limit should be operational soon! A technician needs to come here first. (Almost out of data on my mobile hotspot.)

Totally agree, I just like Leviathan more than Xasthur (still really like him!) overall, but his songs were incredible. I will get the 2013 Abyssal right now, the atmosphere is just great! I think you brought up Zhrine a while back and I was intrigued. Liked them so much I ordered the record the same day.

Right now spinning this as I have not listened to it in a while and it's so good:

Is it just me that find that metal is much more interesting nowadays? I know that some only acknowledge that only bands from the 70/80s are "metal". Just sharing my thoughts as there are way too many amazing bands for me to check out for now.

As of what I am listening to now, UCOHA by Impetuous Ritual is absolutely terrifying. Definitely one of those that really could live up with pushing the boundaries of death metal, for me at least. I am sure that Portal and Abyssal would be up next. Man I am way behind and there are so many things that I'm into as well. The dilemma and the cave that I am in... Maybe I should just concentrate on just metal music ans spare the rest of the time on some others that I can manage?

Modern metal is far more interesting to me as well.

None of us could ever hope to hear everything that's out there. Even after being an avid metal listener for more than half my life, I feel like I've barely begun to scratch the surface. You just gotta take it one step at a time. What I do now is just add bands I read about and want to listen to in the future to a text file, to keep track of it all.
