Lets Talk Metal

Gamma Ray's new album "To the Metal" is available for preorder (to be released end of Jan 2010). There are two editions of the CD and a red vinyl release as well. They switched to a new label, Ear Music, which hopefully means it will be mastered in a less brickwalled fashion than their previous two releases. However, I'm not too optimistic, mainly because the vinyl appears to be a single disc unless amazon.co.uk has incomplete information - more for collectors than listeners. If they're not taking care to make the vinyl sound good by putting it on two discs, then what are the odds that they're going to make the CD sound good by mastering it carefully?

In other news, I've been quite enjoying Ensiferum - From Afar

On Saturday night I put the kids to bed, turned down the lights, sat down with my HD600s, and listened to Lemuria by Therion from start to finish. I have to say, that is one amazingly recorded album. That is all.

Devin Townsend - Addicted (2009)

8/10

Metal and Pop have never co-existed so happily as they do on this album. It's not quite the "danceable" music that HevyDevy said it was going to be, but it's melodic, heavy, fun and crushing all at the same time. Like Aqua doing Industrial Metal - and succeeding.

Anneke Van Giersbergen co-handling the vocals is a thing of beauty.

I'm really glad Devin Townsend is keeping himself busy lately. This is his second album this year and he's already got three albums lined up after this (which includes a Ziltoid sequel!) hopefull all coming out next year.

Azagthoth, been enjoying Grave Miasma, Obliteration and Pathogen. Great stuff.

It's pretty good. I prefer Outre more though. Allso, Curator has a new costume. No more Mr Clockhead. Either way, I really wanna see them live. Pity they only do shows exclusive to Brisbane and MDF.

I can't speak for "Swarth", but it took me almost a year to fully digest their previous album "Outre". At first it seems they're playing disjointed noise, but when it fully clicks, wow. Absolutely unmatched otherworldly atmosphere that's just on the right side of insanity.

No problem man. Speaking of Pathogen, they've already finished recording for the upcoming sophomore album in 2010, "Miscreants of Bloodlusting Aberrations". I think it's now in the mixing/mastering stages.

Their debut 2007 release "Blasphemous Communion" was remastered and re-released this year by Old Cemetery records (indie label in Rhode Island) with an additional bonus track, you can purchase a copy here for only $5.

True old-school DM in the vein of Morbid Angel, Autopsy and Repulsion.

They also released two '09 splits, "All Flesh Fades" and "Nefarious Metal Aggressors". Those can be purchased from Willie (the frontman) directly, shoot him an email at xenon_codex@hotmail.com, he's a cool dude that always replies to queries.

so i went to best buy to try to get some of the earlier In Flames albums that i dont currently own, and all they had were some remasters that were in some funny looking cases with rounded corners. I was wondering if anyone had heard these? and if you had, what was your impression? should i try to find the originals? everyone says they sounded pretty damn good
