It does bring up questions though. As what would have happened if Varg had not murdered Euroymous? We can only wonder.

Speaking of...I always enjoyed his ambient neofolk album Hliðskjálf, which he recorded in prison:

I somewhat liked his new metal albums after he got back out, but was so turned off by Umskiptar that I haven't even heard his two newest. I did wonder a few times whether his music would have been higher quality if he had kept recording metal albums without that sixteen year hiatus.

Of the two synth albums he did while locked up, you have the later one, I have the first one on CD, but never really liked it. My question ( though silly ) is what would Mayhem have sounded like?

I actually don't like that one much either, though I haven't listened to it in a long time.

Another interesting non-metal project formed by a black metal musician (Tharen of Abigor and Amestigon) is Dargaard. Don't recall if you've heard them, but it's really excellent neoclassical darkwave / dark ambient.

Eternity Rite (Pt. 1: Sight From The Abyss / The Confession And Prophecy)
Demon Eyes
Underworld Domain
In Nomine Aeternitatis
Fire's Dominion
Rise And Fall
Bearer Of The Flame

Speaking of Tharen...many know that he was Abigor's vocalist on their demos, but he also contributed keyboards and songwriting on some of their studio albums.

Good question!

I didn't know anyone listened to Varg's prison music. I think it's ******* awful. I mean it's competent but there's probably 500 ambient albums (minimum) out there that are much better. I only listen to Filosofem as I still firmly believe that's the only worthwhile Burzum album. Also, **** giving that scumbag any money.

I'm inclined to agree that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of better ambient releases out there...but I still really like Hliðskjálf!

I like various songs from his discography. "Det Som En Gang Var" (first track of Hvis Lyset Tar Oss) is probably my favorite.

For those who weren't aware, there's an ambient thread now:

I already listened to it on Bandcamp.

Don't even bother. Apparently people here are okay with listening to racist/fascist nazi music.

Favorite Avant-garde release from last year.
The vocals are crazy ♥

Complete album

He does bring a lot of the traditional folk sound, which is interesting. But the tools at his disposal for the recording are just uninteresting and corny sounding, not really his fault but it's like you say, there's so many better things to be listening to, you won't get to everything.

I'll check out the ambient thread. Most of the music I'm making these days falls under that, lots of horror soundtrack stuff.

oooh, you're a musician too?

From my profile: I have done vocals practically my entire life, piano since ~1993, and trombone and guitar since ~1996.

I actually sort of created my own metal genre, which I nicknamed Manic Metal. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to record any of it at the moment.
