LCD-2, LCD-3, Owners and the Music They Love...
Jul 11, 2011 at 5:25 PM Post #451 of 1,111
Here are some Jazz recommendations for you, from an owner of the "LCD-2 Lites" (i.e. HD 650s).
Pasting album covers isn't working for some reason; sorry.
I've tried to avoid any of the more well known Jazz musicians, i.e. Miles, Coltrane, Mingus, even thought there are lots of gems within their albums.

David Murray
Special Quartet
"Special" because it is former John Coltrane band members, except for Murray. I think that some of the tracks on this are better than the Coltrane originals. I saw David Murray live a few years ago, and he is highly recommended if you have the chance to see him. Excellent tenor sax player.

David Murray
Octet plays 'Trane
The first track on this (Giant Steps) is my favourite hi-fi torture test. If it sounds as if the musicians can't keep time, you need to upgrade. It may be best to avoid this if your wallet has taken enough abuse recently. On a good system it really swings, on an average one they sound as if they've never met before.

John Abercrombie
While We're Young
This is an unusual trio of guitar, drums and Hammond organ and is excellent. There are two other albums by the same trio, but this is my favourite. I was fortunate enough to see this trio live and they were fantastic. Animato is also recommended, but is different in style.

Roberto Magris Europlane
Check In
I'd had this on my system for a year and hadn't played it. BIG mistake, it's the best new Jazz album I've listened to in some time.

Dave Holland
Extensions
I've loved this ever since it was released. Steve Coleman's sax playing on this is exquisite.

Kenny Wheeler
Angel Song and The Widow at the Window.
The former is just a beautiful sounding album, and aptly named.

If any of these grab your interest, I've got a lot more recommendations along similar lines that you'll probably also like.

I found Kenny Wheeler's Angel Song and a few others by him and Dave Holland's Extensions but I couldn't find the rest. Not yet anyway.

I was less emotionally attached. my first pair I had for only 5 days, and the second pair just 7 weeks.  Now I'm on my third pair!

Whenever I hear the Mozart Requiem I think of the movie Amadeus and the wife of Mozart calling him "Volfvie!  Volfvie!"

I like the music, but some of the Fresh Aire albums were terribly /poorly recorded.

Thats unfortunate.   I've always wanted to remix and remaster all of The Moody Blues albums because I love the music but never liked the mix or mastering.

Yeah, since I never had access to the studio masters, I can't say where the problems originated, but most of the problems sound like they come from multi-generation problems of analog track bounces, overdubs, and mix downs.   Bad wow and flutter, garbled and rolled off HF, bad S/N, etc.  Really sux, 'cause, as I said, the music, composition, arrangement, and performance is nice to listen to.

They must have been in the nitty gritty of it when they were working and didn't realize audiophiles would come around checking them out.

If it helps in hunting them down, here are the details that I've found...

It looks as if Special Quartet is no longer available except used.
It was released on DIW/Columbia but I can't find a catalogue number.
If you ask nicely I could be persuaded to loan it to you, postal charges for a CD to the US from the UK can't be that expensive. Drop me a PM if you're struggling to find it and it's of interest.

Octet Plays Trane is;
Label: Justin Time Records
ASIN: B00004RBZF

While We're Young, ECM 1489, that and the other two albums from the same trio are at;
http://www.ecmrecords.com/Catalogue/ECM/1400/1489.php?cat=%2FArtists%2FAbercrombie+John+Trio%23%23John+Abercrombie+Trio&we_start=0&lvredir=712

Roberto Magris, Check In
Label: Soul Note
ASIN: B0009JZV6A

The other recommendations might have to wait until the weekend, work is taking up the hours at the moment.

Let me know what you think of what you've found.

Orchestra Baobab - Senegalese-Cuban jazz/pop - LCD-2 loves meaty Afro-Cuban music

A good start is "Specialist in All Styles" album but all of their albums will eventually end up in your collection
