I did experiment with that, ended up liking both the HD 650 and HD 660S more with +6 pre-gain and actually like the amp in general with most of my headphones more at +6. Curious how things will change as I try different DACs with the G111.
The G111 MKII is an amplifier that leaves you amazed by how it sounds. I use the MMB DAC. I had the HD660s for about a year and I didn't like them, they were too tiring. The HD650 and G111 MKII are a fantastic match. I sold the G111 MKII, but I will buy it again as soon as possible. I have the V200 and honestly I could easily live with the G111 lMKII (a monster of audio quality).
That’s basically the same price I got mine from Amazon (with Amazon as the seller). They also sell the Violectric amps on Amazon as well now including the V340, V550, etc.
I was able to pick up the G111 Mk1 for $280 recently and paired it up with my JDS Element lll Mk2 Dac/Amp as my dac. Wow you could really hear the upgrade in dynamic sound on the low and and Improved imaging. Love this Amp.
Is the G111 v2 a big improvement or a modest upgrade?

Congrats! Lake People's amps have been consistently excellent IME. I agree with @Fegefeuer that your next move should likely be a DAC upgrade. Depending on your budget even something like the Schiit Bifrost 2 is a pretty good match to the G111 and will be a noticeably step up from the Element's DAC. Geshelli J2S w/ Sparkos op amps (either 4493 or 4499) are also excellent options.
To answer your question...the mk2 is a somewhat substantial upgrade over the mk1 to my ears, especially in midbass control. Is it worth shelling out $550 for it in your current situation? Probably not. I'd say get a nice DAC and then save up again for a bigger amp upgrade after that (assuming you have headphones you like and want to keep using).

Thanks, It was your review that made me get the G111 when I saw it for sale, and can say I don't regret it. I'm very pleased with the amp and I am currently selling My Element lll Mk2 in the classifieds, to raise money for an the Dac.
I just purchased the G105 mk2 from Amazon for $499 it's $499 everywhere else, but same specs as G111 mk2 which I originally ordered then canceled. They are exactly the same except for balance knob and extra switches on the face.
Same soundwise.

I looked into this at some length a while ago when trying to decide between the various Lake People amps. The G111 is discrete, but the lower-numbered amps (G103, 105, 108) are all based around Burr Brown OPA511 op-amps. G105 is the single-ended version of the G108. G103 is a bit different as it has a different, less powerful power supply, but also has OPA511 op-amps (I recently had one and opened it up to check).
