KSC 75's to MS-1? SR-80?

DT770 have nothing in common with the Grado sound signature. I had quite a bit of experience with both the SR225 and the DT770, and those two pairs of cans are very different. The Koss, on the other hand, are pretty similar to the Grados, bright and happy.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what about KSC75 vs SR80? I am mainly interested in the difference in bass. I happen to like the KSC75 bass, and I am a basshead (EQ the lows up slightly on D2000 to get MOAR SLAMMMM, to give you an idea)

The Grados hit hard, meaning that you can feel the impact of the drum beats and guitar. It sounds real, I'm not sure how else to explain it. The highs and mids are much more pronounced than with the Koss.

In concert terms, for me, Koss is like standing at the back of the crowd, it sounds good from a distance, well meshed. The Grados are like standing in front of the stage, and the drum beats and guitar strings seem to thump my eardrums.

I got the SR-80 because I wanted the bowl pads. I think the 60 and 80 are exactly the same except for the pads and the width of the cable. With flat pads the 80s would sound exactly like the 60s I'm guessing.

Thanks, cool comparison. I got exactly what you were saying.

I have the KSC75's and SR225's. I believe the SR225's have more bass than the SR80's, but don't quote me on that. Anyways, I like my bass as well, and the KSC75's do have more bass than the SR225's. The midbass hump might be a bit larger on the Grados, but the KSC75's definitely sound thicker; however, both are not accurate headphones. The KSC75's have a plastic sounding midrange; the SR225's have a similar midrange signature, but it's less plasticy and more nasally. I definitely wouldn't want to listen to women's vocals on either for very long.

The SR225's have more speed, resolution, and detail. The treble is OK for either can, but it's definitely the weak point for both.

Overall, I still like the KSC75's for lots of music because of the larger quantity of bass. I like my music to sound weighty. I do wish they had the speed of the Grado, though.

I voted other:

Keep the 75s, mod them if you want. Eventually, explore higher end stuff. Not necessarily Grado stuff, hence the "Other" vote. You probably won't get rid of your 75s, though. They might end up as gym cans or something.

Try it and see. To me, SSR60 is like Cronenberg monster coming up and stabbing my ears (aggressive just ain't my sound, I guess). I don't even think I had managed five minutes

. I'm loving the sound of a HP generally renown for being boring, and still use the KSC75s regularly.

It can't hurt to give the Grados a listen. The KSC75 are sufficiently balanced to lead you down any path...

Yeah, I'd really like to try them sometime. I'm in no hurry since I recently purchased another headphone. Is anyone familiar with a chain store in the United States that carries Grados?

Maybe someday I'll invest in an amp and a higher end phone, but at the moment, I'd just like a good headphone to use everyday. I don't really game any more, so I don't want a full-size headphone and the Grado sound really interests me. I think I've narrowed it down to either an SR-80 or an MS-1. I really can't afford to spend any more currently. Quickly glancing through some threads, it seems like people prefer the MS-1. Does it keep the agressive, bright sound? And if I do buy it, would it be best to buy straight from Alessandro? Oh yeah, I will still be using these unamped, is that ok? I plan on getting an fiio e5 when it comes out.

Thanks.

SR80 out of the three.

But for a more all-rounder thats more accurate and blocks some noise..., try the M-Audio Q40. You can find them used about $100, or new for about $150.

The 75's when amped the right way can really be competitive with some $100 headphones though.

If you go for the SR80, try the Sennheiser 414 yellow pads with a Quarter-sized hole in the middle.

Thanks for the response. These will be used with my iPod touch most of the time, but sometimes my macbook. When you said the 75's will do well with an amp, are we talking a high-end one? Or would a FiiO do it well. These cans will be used to listen to a lot of rock. Is the SR-80 still the best choice? I saw the Q40's on Amazon for $126, but how does the sound signature compare to the Grado. Also, if I purchase the SR-80, are the yellow pads essential? Would ebay be my best bet to get them?

Sorry, I have a lot of questions, but I want to make the right decision. Thanks.

I wish I could. But the longer I stick around here, the more I begin to second guess myself :/

As far as bass and midrange, there is simply no contest - the SR-60s are in a whole higher league.

Okay, being a Saturday morning with a little free time and awaiting delivery of my DT770s from Amazon, I decided to go ahead and do the Kramer mod on my KSC75s. I only have the stock pads and didn't want to nickel or quarter mod them yet as I thought the Koss already a bit bright for my tastes. I must confess that with the holes drilled in the grill cover, this really is a whole different animal. Far more bass extension (though a tad "sloppy" in the bass, like the difference between a vented and closed speaker), much closer in quality to the Grado's. As I'm listening, I may need to do the quarter mod to balance the sound a bit more unless I can find a pair of the planatonics pads locally (can't see paying $10 or more shipping on $5 item). With a better seal at the ear (such as the pleather plantonics may give) I can see why people compare this so favorably to the SR60s. I may still prefer the Grado, but I'll have to give these more of a listen. Hard to imagine getting this good sound from a $15 set of cans.
