KGSShv Carbon - hows it sound with the 009s?

The #1 tubes TheAttorney got are basically called "EL34 Philips Miniwatt Holland metal base" and go for $1,500-2,000 for four of them.

...But perhaps we should all discuss this in the BHSE thread, to help keep this one on topic. I just generally avoid the bigger threads, because they involve a lot more work to keep up with.

OK, but I would rather have bog-standard $70/quad Russian EL34 tubes in a DIY T2 than $2K+ unobtanium tubes in a new BHSE...just saiyan'...

Good point! With those tubes, the BHSE (from the international market to skip the wait period) would be over $9,000. (lol, now we're both making DBZ references!) But on the other hand, the DIY T2 is much more unobtainium. (The aforementioned tubes can be purchased immediately from various websites.) I don't even know how to go about commissioning a build, and those who have in the past informed me that it's more difficult nowadays. I even read a rumor about the cost just for the out of production parts for the DIY T2 being over $10K. If I knew I could definitely get one, I'd go for that instead of the BHSE, but it seems less and less likely, plus there's the long wait period involved.

@ Music Alchemist,

I believe Birgir has a DIY T2 ( built by him but not for sale ), BHSE ( built by Justin though probably not for sale ) , and a couple KGSSHV Carbons ( also built by him, to which are for sale ).

So I'm sure Birgir would let you know which of those stats amps would be best to get, although if he suggested the DIY T2, then I'm not sure if he'd build you one.

Yeah, I guess I should have a chat with him about that. Haven't talked with him in awhile. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm also gonna see if he would be willing to make a Carbon with a black faceplate.

This is my newbie SR-009 experience as well.  I tried the Gungnir MB, Meridian G08, Neko Audio D100, ANK Audiokits 4.1 LE (upgraded unit used by DigitalPete for demos), Teac UD-301 ($299 with rebate at Amazon) with my KGSS-HV/SR-009, and while I much prefer the ANK over the others, they are all more than good enough.  I could have lived with the Teac UD-301 with no complaints.  Just don't get a bright DAC.

How are you feeding the AN DAC 4.1? It need a very good transport or a decent USB/SPDIF conveyor.

One of the things that would worry me a bit, is the reliability of a T2. All that heat and more tubes / complexity. I guess the KG T2 design is better in that regards v the Stax debacle.....

I read KG's description of accidentally burning through metal with it once.

(But I think that was in the context of building it, not normal use.) The main thing that makes the DIY T2 less of a viable option is the fact that it's even more difficult nowadays to find someone to build it. Plus you'd probably have to wait over a year to actually get it. Since that upgraded BHSE would be over $9K (that's DIY T2 price territory), maybe it would be better to just go for the Carbon before either of them.

That's beside the point in a way - because obsessive types who want the best tube possible for their BHSE will also want the best tube possible for their DIY T2. And so it escalates.

The Carbon is definitely the simpler choice, although of course there's always fuse rolling if that's just too simple ;-)

There's going to come a time when NOS tubes are no longer available, and those that are using NOS's should know they'll not last forever.
This is another reason why I'm planning on getting a KGSSHV Carbon because I'll then probably be driving my Earspeaker's with that Carbon, as much as the BHSE, which means if I'm using the BHSE lesser, then my xf4's will obviously last longer.

While I've never heard 009's with a KGSSHV Carbon, I have with two KGSSHV's both owned by astrostar59, and although I prefer the BHSE to those KGSSHV's, I was still very impressed with how they made my 009's sound, in fact if I didn't have the BHSE, then I'd be very happy with a KGSSHV, having said that I like the idea of having a KGSSHV Carbon more so.

If you're 3, 4, 5 years away from a Carbon. Isn't it all a bit premature.
