I corrected the price in my first post. I originally quoted $360, but that was with shipping (and additional insurance) included. Without shipping they are $315.

Audio Technica (W5000, A700, A500 for instance).

Exactly, most likely an AT-sourced phone. It's neither here nor there, couldn't care less who makes a phone, so long as it sounds great.

How about sibilance (my main complaint with headphones)?

Very interesting! They are available on audiocubes?

Wow, expensive there though. Will have to look around...

Except that Denon and Beyer also use the same screw-on connector...

Cool. I've always been a 'deal hunter'.

Have you heard the AD2000's? If so, does the Kenwood come even close SQ wise? I know they're different, and favor to multiple genre's, but I was just curious.

Yes I owned the AD2000 for a while, but that was a long time ago.
I didn't like them, I preferred the K701, so I sold them again. I found the AD2000 did weird things with imaging and was just "too much of everything" for me. They are on my second chance list though, if the opportunity arises.
As I remember it the Kenwood has a more substantial sound and less airy / extended highs. The mids of the Kenwood are a bit more forward, I like it better this way. The overall balance of the Kenwood is just way better.
The Kenwood sounds natural.
One of my criteria is the sound of applauding people. With the Kenwood it sounds like clapping hands and not like static.
