Don't know about the K601, but for jazz the K500 is great, better than the K501 IMO. Nonetheless, the K501 and K401 are also very good for jazz. The last one has less resolution and detail than the K501, but it compensates that with a very intimate soundstage. You'd have to use K601/K701 pads on the K501, otherwise the bass is a bit too lean for most jazz. The K500 benefits from K601 pads, but doesn't necessarily need it and the K401 has enough bass of itself.

I'm currently borrowing a pair of K601s and comparing them to the K501. The 601s certainly have better bass than the 501s, but I wouldn't call the bass thin on my pair, but it is very tight.

I really think it depends on the kind of jazz you listen to. The mids on the 501s are sweet indeed, and I have yet to hear a better can for female vocals. For male vocals, the 601s get the nod. I prefer the 501s for most of my jazz listening. However, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

Stock, I'd get the K601. If the K501 doesn't have stock pads, I'd buy which ever is cheaper.

The K701 is a major departure from the sound of the rest of that line of headphones.

Ok. Thanks. Where would I find the k500 or k401? And would my ASL tube amp be enough ampage for these cans?

That was what someone told me at the denver meet, too. I completely forget who it was. We should probably have name tags with our avatars printed on them next time.

Still, I've never heard a K501, and my K500 drivers languish in a heavily modified K300M frame.

. The K401s are magical. In the end I rate the K500s higher than the K401, but that's the only one higher up on my AKG list.

I just won a K401 on Ebay...

I will only be able to compare it to the other AKGs I currently have in my sig though.
