I am tempted to pull the trigger on a pair of K1000's. Anyone have any solid, real advice for someone on the fence who likes a big soundstage and a lot of detail? Bass and mids are by far my favorite two frequencies with treble being important (but HD800 always gave me a headache).
Anyone selling theres or anyone know a reliable good place to buy a pair?
The most important question: I have heard of the dreaded "rattle" of the grille from time to time. Is that something that is audible on all of them. Do you guys all experience the rattle at least sometimes?
I'll take a stab at this since I just bought a pair of K1000's (s/n 03344) and also own HD800's.
Like you, unmodified HD800's hurt my ears due to the highs. And I like elevated highs like Stax 009's. But the difference is that to me the HD800's can be harsh especially on sub-par recordings. But the Stax 009's have much smoother highs so they never hurt my ears.
The AKG K1000's remind me a lot of the SR-009's. Elevated high end, but very smooth and non-fatiguing. This also translates to tons of detail, air, and speed.
And when using my Out Of Your Head software, I would say that the K1000's are among the best headphones to recreate the rooms and speakers.
Really amazing soundstage!
But, the only issue is the bass, as many other's have mentioned. I don't really have access to a lot of different amps to try, so my impression of the bass may have to do with the amps I am using.
I have tried my Schiit Ragnarok and an old Carver m4.0T amp (rated at 375W per channel into 8 Ohms).
The bass is pretty light even compared to the Stax 009 or the HD800's. There is bass and it sounds good, but when you mention that bass and mids are you favorite frequencies, then I assume you will be disappointed in the bass quantity.
Maybe with a better amp, there would be more bass.
I guess I should try hooking up my SubPac and see if that helps.
I actually have another pair of K1000's arriving today. (Long story, but I ended up with two.) So, PM me and we can discuss possibly selling you a pair.
