JVC HAR-X700 and 900. Two of the best dynamics? Am I nuts?

So TopPop, if I remove the lens, will RX900 sounds almost the same as RX700??

'Fraid not. There's more difference than that between them.

900 is more full sounding, slightly more airy with a strange slight resonance to it.

700 is more forward, less stuffy, slightly tighter, and none of that pesky resonance. I much prefer the 700, but I know there a members here who prefer the 900. And some really like having both. I would never listen to the 900 as long as I had the 700, so I got rid of it. Still a nice headphone though. Especially for the money. 700 is just better in my opinion. Except for the ear pads. I do like the 900 pads.

Ericular, even with the felt removed, I doubt anyone would consider these sibilant.

What exactly is sibilance? I am still unclear for that.

I'd go with Rex's opinion on this matter, since I've never heard the RX700.

Emphassssisssed sssss'esss generally noticeable in in female (high vocals) sssssingers on ssssibiliant headphonesssss.

And as far as 900 vs 700 goes, I like to think of 900 as more of a adjustable headphone if you do toppop's mods. You can make it sound just about anyway you want it, esp with the bass.

I personally felt the plastic lens did add some soundstage but it comes at the price of slight detail loss. Smaller sounds are harder to hear and highs are more muted (which isn't the strong point of the cans to start with).

Around 100 hours of burn in.

I don't believe in physical burn-in, and think whatever changes you hear will simply be from your brain and ears adjusting to the headphones. That said, I'd recommend the felt mod to increase treble.

How do these headphones compare to their counterparts within the same price range, ie MS1, Grado SR60, GRADO sr 80i, AD700? I think a lot of newbies like me would like to know if any of you headfiers out there could do a review based on these few headphones..THANKS!

I couldn't wait any longer, and ordered the rx700s from a reputable eBay seller. They're only in stock in Japan, so expect to pay about $90 shipped.

However, a shipment of rx900s seems to have made it into the US just recently. Buy.com's rx900 orders shipped out, and they were briefly in stock there last Thursday, but sold out again in under 24 hours.

BUT, Newegg still has the rx900s in stock. They're $15 more than Buy.com, but who knows when either of these phones will come back in stock again... might be worth it!

Here's the link to Newegg:

Ummm. Well the 700's are great cans, and I don't regret buying them for a minute... but I only paid $35 shipped for mine. Looking back I don't think I would spend $90 on them mostly because they make my ears incredibly hot and that can become pretty uncomfortable after awhile. On the other hand, judging just by sq they are very competitive with many other phones in that range.

Well of the ones on your list I have only sat down and compared the 700's side by side with the SR60's and to be honest in my opinion the 700's are superior in detail and they have much tighter bass but 60's soundstage was a little bigger.

After doing the felt mod on my rx700s, I like them better than $150 DT 770's... so in that regard they were worth $90 to me. If they ever come back in stock for $35, I think they are a no-brainer good buy. In addition, I think they can hold their own against other phones in the $100 range... but just beware of the buyer's remorse you might feel if Buy.com has them back in stock for $35 the day after you order them from Japan.
