JVC HA-FW01 - The New Top End Wood Driver IEM (2017)

Thanks for all the help 2 years ago. I finally bought the jvc last year and hooked them up to a Fiio m11. I like them. Because of the pandemic my commuting almost stopped, so haven’t used them much. I was wondering which balanced cable you are using it with.
For the FW01 I was using a JVC branded cable that terminated in two separate 3.5mm plugs, because I was using it with the SU-AX01. I don’t use my FW01 anymore.

These days I use my FW10000 with a ALOaudio Silver Litz cable and a Walkman WM1A that I run in Bluetooth receiver mode, but not in commute anymore since I started taking the subway again.

My daily commute earphones are:
Airpods Pro
Beats Flex
Sennheiser IE 800 S

The IE 800 S in particular is a good companion earphone to the FW10000. Slightly stronger bass and very similar out-of-head presentation, though the FW10000 is more dramatic in that regard. Crutchfield had them on sale recently.

I've been on a JVC kick lately. Pulled out my FX850s and discovered they were my favorite IEMs using Sedna Xlastic tips. This inspired me to get HA-FW01s which I love even more. Now thinking about HA-FW1800s. Can't find many comparisons of them vs the FW01s. Can anyone here compare the two? Would they be a big upgrade or only minor? Apparently, they have the FW10k driver in them which is enticing. Thanks.

Not the same driver. The Fw10000 cost 3 times the price of fw1800.

This is from Drop.com:

From the anniversary HA-FW10000 IEM, the HA-FW1800 features JVC’s ultra-thin 50-micrometer birchwood dome carbon diaphragms to deliver expansive, natural-sounding audio. From the popular FW-01 IEM, the HA-FW1800 favors a streamlined design and high-performing hardware components.

Perhaps it's only some of the FW10k driver components?

It's the same driver, with the same specs:
https://www.jvc.com.hk/en/products/ha-fw1800-s322
https://www.jvc.com.hk/en/products/ha-fw10000-s312

IMO this driver is a definite upgrade over the ones used in the FX850 and FW01.

However, the FW1500/1800 tuning is rather v-shaped and more similar to the FX850 than FW01, the latter of which is a bit more downsloping with more restrained high range. But if you prefer the FW01 tuning, you can easily damp the FW1800's nozzle with micropore tape to change its signature to a more downsloping one.

All in all, I'd say if you're on a JVC kick and can stomach the price, then go for it. It's a very nice and capable IEM. And I have retired my FX850 and FW01 since I got it.

Thanks. Well, is there anything out there nowadays for $600 (or under) that would beat the FW1800 ? I like hard hitting bass.

Hi guys, haven't been following JVCs at all. I have been a huge fan of 750 and 850, but it seems like JVCs don't make those woodies anymore? What is the latest that sounds like these?
Their last product that sounded like that was the FX1100. The succeeding FW01 and FW10000 were both departures from the bassy sound.

My 1100 are on their last leg, one of the mesh vents broke somehow.

So I’m currently A/Bing the FW01 and FW1800. I’m preferring the FW01 so far, it feels a bit more in your head, deeper low end, but slightly more veiled in the upper frequencies. They really slam on Evelyn Kings “I’m in Love”

The FW1800 seems to be a bit wider maybe, but thinner in the lower end and neutral. Not as “fun”

Gonna keep listening and post some more impressions. Which ones do y’all prefer?

The 1800 is a departure from the comparatively bassier sound of the FW01 and the 1100 before that. The bass presentation is clean and highly articulate but does not have a lot of pressure. It takes some getting used to. I reckon they’ll sound their best with a balanced cable.
