If I may interject here .... I dont think the 5687's are the problem. The EH 6SN7 gives nothing close to the sound quality you get from a good nos 6n7gt.

Have you tried anything other than 5687s as output tubes with the gs1k? If I were you I'd get some adapters and try some 6sn7, 6bx7, or 6bl7 tubes (since you have an se), as its possible that 5687s just don't synergize well with the gs1k to your ears.

EDIT: Yeah earl is probably right about the EH's, they just don't compare to good nos tubes.
