JH Audio Layla Impressions Thread

I'm surprised you find it that long? I literally had my impressions done, and the Laylas in my hands in < 10 days.

I believe JH Audio will completely re-shell Laylas, as I had inquired about it, and IIRC it was $250 an ear.

Don't understand what you mean, as what is the surprise?

I have moved away from CIEM for the pain of creating ear impression, long waiting time, resale problem, and thus not going to try it again.

Enjoying universal IEM and my Layla 2 titanium serves me really well as found a couple of good ear tips that matches nicely - provides the same seal and comfort too as my old JH16pro. Thus, my own conclusion is, no point going custom, as once you find the right ear tips, it is better to stay universal.

I just meant that getting customs from JH Audio can be fairly quick, but I suppose that is contingent on going down the "happy path". I have gotten impressions from two different doctors, and the results were pretty different (they used different materials for the impressions). I now stick with the one doctor who has made several sets for me, and everything has turned out great. She uses a putty that she mixes together, and it works out really well. Just in case you ever think of going back - I can find out the exact name.

I had a couple of universals but didn't dig the fit despite trying a number of different foam tips (including complys). I gave up, though I do like the higher (and easier) resale aspect of universals. Anyhoo, to each his own. Laylas rock regardless !..!_

I have relatively "straight" ear path, as mentioned by the audiologist who made my ear impressions. Thus, it was easier to find the correct seal in a universal IEM.

I found the Comply small tip quite good for Layla 2, but it does not last long. Moved to Spnfits, which are good as well. Spiral Dot does not meet my needs as the stalk is too short for the long bore. Found the double-flanges at a regular audio store which provides a complete seal and comfort yet does not slip out like the spinfits. Bought a few spares and enjoying my Layla 2 fully now with nice warm musical sound from Calyx M.

There's a trick to use Spiral dots with IEMs with long nozzles. A simple mod- The seamon mod. Take a comply tip. Remove the foam till you get the inner long plastic barrel thingy. Cut it 2/3rd and remove the wax guard(if you have that on). Fit the barrel into the IEM nozzle and then fit the spiral dot into the nozzle outer lining. Attach Spiral dot and barrel with a very thin piece of plastic tape.

I had every impression of picking up either the Ether C or Ether C Flow yesterday. Spent a good hour AB testing various favorite tracks; then decided to try the Layla IIs for a bit of fun.
5 mins later, I walked out with them. Amazing resolution and soundstage. I'm in utter love with my music again...

Will need to get a balanced cable made for the Laylas into the new Sony 4.4mm connector, so still need to figure that out.

I'll be keeping my ears to the ground on this one, too. I've got the 1a ordered for my layla IIs. Also the reason I got rid of my Hugo was the clumsiness of stacking.

Keep me posted if you find any vendors that are making cables for these sony units! Norse Audio posted something about getting the connectors, but I don't see anything about supporting the Siren series on his website. DHC will supposedly be an option in the next year, but given the long lead times not a route I'm leaning towards...

Thanks! Looking at your website it doesn't appear that you support the JH  Audio Siren series (I have a Layla). Can you verify?

PM sent.

Coming from the experience of using a Sony ZX2 with a 3.5mm TRRS Balanced cable, I won't go through this again. Any form of "balanced" plug is a standalone standard for one or a small number of DAPs using the same plug, and thus making my IEM completely useless for any other DAPs or sources, such as laptop, mobile phones when you need them. E.g. listening on a flight via the inflight entertainment system.

Have been through a few "balanced" sources and the difference is not much for some DAPs, and even none for a few DAPs (I have tried both balanced/unbalanced Hifiman HM-801, Sony ZX2, Opus#1 ABS and Metal, etc., as well as using a few balanced amp). Some single ended sources are much better than many "Balanced" sources. I have not tested all the DAPs like some of the experienced reviewers, but spent enough cash on buy/sell experience to derive this.

I would suggest getting an adapter though, if anyone wish to dive into the new 4.4mm standard that Sony is creating. Just in case Sony's tuning is not your taste, you can change your DAP later without having to reterminate your cable.

Great suggestion. I would also recommend that your "base" cable be terminated to 2.5mm balanced. It is the smallest connector and easily converted to any balanced or SE plug with the appropriate adapter. My personal stock of adapters include RSA, 3.5mm TRRS, 3.5mm TRS, and XLR balanced.
