I enjoyed your review and you nailed it on the head multiple times.  I suppose Jazz will never be mainstream but even among jazz fans they've probably never heard of this trio.  I think it was pure luck that I had stumbled upon them on HD Tracks because they are not going to be on anyone's top 100 jazz bands of all time (though I might argue differently if we could break up the categories into modern and fundamental jazz).  
 
I agree as well that these guys can take you on a ride that starts off laid back and then take you on deep funk, experimental ride.
 
I will check out your site for many gems.  Maybe there needs to be a good iPhone/Droid app that tracks great jazz bands because there are a lot mentioned in this thread that I have never heard.

Definitely pick up one of their albums. I've listened to Isla 5 or 6 times the last few days.

I'm quite new to jazz and I like this music, it's so rich ! But there are so many styles of jazz.
So far my favourite album is The black saint and the sinner lady by Charle Mingus
Do any of you have recommandation for me considering my specific tastes ?
