I was in goodguys listening to fones and the 580s were as good as they had. I brought my Sony MDR V600s for comparison and cried all the way home

. The price they quoted was $275 which seemed like a real rip off. I was glad to see that I could get the HD600s for $250 online.


So do you guys think I should just go for the 600s?

HD580 and HD600 sound a little different from each other and the differences to most people would not be noticed. But if you want to go for the gold and not regret about not getting the HD600 down the line, go buy the HD600. Many people have tried to save money by buying the H580 instead, only to buy the HD600 later.

There are other good alternatives too. Grados, AKG, and the Beyerdymics may make headphones that might fit your needs better (ie: portability, comfort, sound properties, etc...).

That's an extremely controversial question, whether or not the 600's are a significant upgrade over the 580's. All I can say is that you should definitely listen to them yourself to decide if they're worth it to you (but judge them objectively, don't let those beautiful carbon-fiber frames fool ya). It's mandatory anyway to test out headphones before buying them.

I don't believe anyone who owned both headphones would prefer the sound of the 580 over the 600....

.....at least, not anyone who's opinion I trust.

HI: I always thought that the 580 sounded great with medium source and medium amp but the 600 sounded great with real good source and real good amp.

The answer to your question is "yes". Just be careful with the punched metal covers on the HD600 though - they are prone to dents.

Budget:

$150-175: HD580 (stock)
$220-250: HD600 (stock)
$250-350: HD580 + Upgrade cable (Clou/Cardas/Equinox)
$350-450: HD600 + Upgrade cable (Clou/Cardas/Equinox)

You won't regret buying either one. Personally, I would plan on an upgrade cable regardless of the model you choose (they use the same cables).

Depends on what you are going to use for an amp.

The 580/600's need power. And a good quality source.
Otherwise, why have them? 580's you can get for $140.

Either phone with an expensive add on cable won't do you a bit of good unless you have a good amp and source.

Why not!? Its only going to get better! Unless you plan on trying to get the HD 580's online for cheaper...

I say go for the 580's for about $150. Just try them out. Burn them in good.

I have been burning in my 580s for a few days now. I made a CD of Eije Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra (Reference Recordings)
Doing "Baba Yaga" from "Mephisto and Co." CD. Have 16 tracks of the same song on one CD. Had an old Magnavox CDB650
CD deck. A oldie but goodie. It's headphone jack is slamming the 580's just fine. Over and over goes Baba Yaga, which is outstanding for testing bass response and slam.

I tried the 580's on the PRemium Little today. Sounds good even with stock cables. I think most people would be very happy with the 580's. Spend the extra money over the 600's toward an amp.
