throw in a $400 aftermarket cable and you are talking just under $2k. you definitely need a decent budget if you want to play around with the HD800. i think it's worth it but if i had to live with my balanced 650 or HE60/HEV70, i could. on the other hand, i think the 800 will be my reference headphone for a good while, so finding that also factors into the value equation.

You can't say overpriced there are many factors that make the price high like marketing,researches and experiments,the value and quality of materials used,the package,demand of the market(it is a niche product).....and many others.

The hd800's are made out of plastic and headphone tech has been pretty much the same for a long time. OP please google supply and demand.

OP, there is a mooncake called Denon D7000. Less expensive, yes. For that performance, to me they are seriously overpriced.

arent all headphones overpriced in a way? i mean does it REALLY cost $1400 to make one pair of hd800? the prices are prolly a lot higher than what its worth because ppl will most likely still buy them. but thats just what i think and i could possibly be wrong.

If only look at the parts, material, and labor, HD800 are way over priced. look at technical achievement as audio product they are under priced or OK priced. Check out how Audio Technica, Grado, and Stax price their headphones!

Talk about over pricing, Grado has been doing it for years.

To some it may not be over priced. myself personally I wouldnt spend 1400 for any headphone. I have went through the high end game for 30 yrs. Now I try to find gear that is priced right high end and will spen as little as possible. Dealer markup on that is 100 percent. nice profit and pretty much cant be discounted. I am sure they will start floated up dsiscounted. I still wouldnt be interested even if it was 800.oo

If people bought more senns instead of bose & skullcandy, the HD800 might be cheaper. With so much crap in the marketplace, it's expensive to develop and market a quality product.

To me the AT2000 is more over priced then the HD800. They were 500.00 2 years ago. Now they are 700. And many feel they are worth 400. I might get a D7000 to hear the bass I miss from my current headphones.. Or get the T1 for a grand if possible. I love neutral, but I do like over the top sound every know and then.

Wait long enough and the prices will eventually go down. When that happens, then that will be the best time to buy. This is based on trends, however this headphone may have a following that Sennheiser foresees so it may not follow the trend. I don't know what the future holds. I am leaning toward the trend.
