iPod hype finally cooling down?

Personally the iPod has gotten boring for me. It's still a terrific DAP, but it's just lost its appeal because it's hardly changed in the past few years. Sure they've added features since the 4G, but I only use it really to listen to music, and that functionality (with the notable addition of gapless) hasn't changed and the click wheel has stayed. Though to be fair, DAP's in general have sort of lost their appeal. I just don't like walking around with my ears covered up anymore, I'd rather hear the world around me. I just sold my iPod and now I'm setting up a dorm system. One thing I'd really like to get a hold of is a Colorware'd and iModded iPod, but I can't stomach the cost.

Dammit, this topic made me think of my old iPod U2.. I loved that thing even though I eventually sold it to try out other players. It was one sexy beast. Maybe I'll grab another one sometime if the opportunity comes up.

Did you really love it. You seem to be the type that lost the white firewire-cab.

True click wheel is not all that, but watching video on an abysmally tiny screen is not for me and not for most. Might be fine for some teens but that is about it. I'd prefer watching on a 52" LCD or a projector...not on a 4x2" screen. But whatever floats one boat, I still would not call that a Nano killer.

I finally see a post that shares my view!! I am also in the process of building a dorm setup starting to move to CDs too. My iPod only sees use these days when I play games on my xbox 360. I replaced my portable rig to an old 256mb Sony dap my sister stopped using when I bought an ipod nano for her birthday which by the way sounds way better than an ipod.

I agree that watching a video on a portable is pointless and music is number one. That is why I may go with the superior sounding player for playing music and not use an amp for more portability. The nano feels way to small to me and I don't mind that the Meizu may not be as slim. It's still thin and tiny. The screen is bigger so I don't have to squint to make use of the extra features such as album art and photos. Slimest doesn't meen the best especialy when the extra features are worthless do to the size constraints. I never called it an ipod killer. I was just saying the nano is not the best for everyone.

The hype may have died down, but that's only natural. The question is, has the dominance? And the answer seems to be no. There's not yet anyone who can even come close to being competitive in the marketplace.

Yeah, for me at least
When everyone has one it's just not as 'cool' anymore

It's like when you find out about a song that no one's heard of that you absolutely love
But then the radio found it and keeps playing it over and over then you get sick of listening to it over and over again.. oh and it's now that song that everyone likes

But when a new ipod is out.. maybe

Mr.Do i hope you don't think that because your unknown DAC is great that you are gonna convince any non-audiophile that it is the case. Just do an open test and ask people in the street wich DAC would they choose between the Nano vs the Meizu and you'll be surprise that maybe only little rebelious kid and audiophile would even care for the Maizu. Why is that, don't forget that the best interest people have in the Ipod product is the illusion of satisfaction, apple don't sell product, they seel the experience wich is represented in their publicity. When Apple put a buck in advertising they get big money from it, Meizu won't appeal because people aren't use to see it everywere, just my 2 cents.

I'm not trying to convince people of anything. I'm having a hard time convincing myself. I currently own a 4th gen 60gig ipod and am torn between getting the Meizu m6 or Ipod nano. Maybe I wil get the Meizu and get a Nano for my sister. Then I will ask my friends and coworkers what they think of each. Doesn't matter to me what they like but it is nice that people are aware of what's out there. God forbid you may have to look for it as aposed to crashing into a giant billboard with an ipod on it. Ha. Ha.

Enjoy.

I love my iPod for the reason that I use it for an ultraportable rig. I can easily have my nano in my pocket with out noticing it is even there. It is great to have my im716 and nano for the bus rides and I can easily store it in my pocket, becasuse my back pack has no room!

I agree with everything you wrote. I'm not saying the Nano is the "absolute" best device ever made, but that it could be the best DAP. By best, it would have to be thought of as best by a majority of people to say the least. Now, the iPod is too abundant to get any solid poll going because Grandma knows iPod, they don't know Sandisk, Meizu or any other little known DAP. But that is not all, it is also the reliability, ease of use, form factor etc etc. Sure the Nano may not have the BEST sound, or the BIGGEST screen etc etc., but overall it may come out as the best because it does so many things well. For those with large hands, the Nano may be too small (or that new Shuffle!) for others it is perfectly sized (say, like for me) but certainly there is no one unit for all people for all circumstances. I'm not an Apple Fanboy, in fact, I fought hard against buying an iPod for a long time and went with the Rio Karma (2x) before they died on me in quick succession and I went with the iPhoto. That experience has been grand, with no real hiccup and now, finally, a flash player has come out that has offered me much of what I want. Of course, giving me something the size of the Nano with 1 TB of storage, an awesome DAC and a line out on the unit would be amazing...not to mention true 5 band EQ like the Karma and maybe an FM tuner

But despite these extras, the Nano is certainly doing it for me these days. I'm sure you would be pleased with it or the Meizu, particularly if the small Nano screen hurts your eyes.
