iPhone 7 Will Revolutionize Portable Audio for the First Time in a Decade

So, no review I've read has told me how much power the dongle puts out, or even done a basic comparison (ie. how many steps does it take to get to a set volume on the same pair of headphones?)

The whole headphone issue is most likely overblown for the majority of users, I think.

Ok folks. First reviewer to assess the dongle ouput (Engadget)

If you're still bristling about the whole needing-an-adapter-for-your-headphones thing, well, at least the sound quality doesn't suffer in the process. I used my go-to headphones (a pair of Samsung Level On PROs) to listen to the same music on the 6s and on an iPhone 7 with the Lightning adapter, and couldn't tell any difference at all. Ditto for a blind listen-off between the 6s and the 7 Plus: They sounded identical to me.

Even if i do not know this guy taste and education on the matter, his assessment is very welcome :)

Good stuff.

Here are some more general articles/opinions on lossless vs. MP3 vs. hi-res:

the 2nd link is completely bogus. There are measurable, demonstrable, physical differences in the waveforms created by mp3 compression and flac. whether or not you notice it is a personal thing, but stating it as fact is bogus

I've got my iP7 inbound for release day. Will try the dongle, a DFR, and a GOV2+ and report back. Really hope phone and GOV2+ will be pocketable.

What's bogus is the wide misconception that FLAC sounds better than MP3. Period.

no it isnt. If i can, using software, show mathematical differences between the recreated wave form, it isnt a misconception, its fact. Hell i can even take an mp3 and flac file, using software reconstruct the wave forms, and take a mathematical difference and create a waveform using only that to literally show you, exactly what audio content is missing from the mp3, and yes, it is audible

Which doesn't tell me anything. I fully expected that the dongle would be similar to other headphone-outs. What's missing is data regarding: How much volume is needed in comparison with older iPhones, and how much battery consumption does the dongle use vs. other iPhones, provided volume levels match. That's really all I want. I don't give a crap about lossy, lossless, 24, 96, whatever. And reviewer has said anything, despite their supposed techie-ness. This isn't esoteric audiophilia, IMO.

Got my dongle. Works great with iOS 10 and my 6s. A quick listen sounds really good, lots better than Bluetooth audio and on par with the regular jack. The dongle is tiny, not sure how they got a dac in there. Long story short, there is hope!

Per lightning spec, the power draw will be about 50 mA up to 5V. I don't think you will have a problem with battery life. My DFR draws negligible battery on my iPhone and I would expect the Apple dongle to use even less power. Will have an answer on volume hopefully by Friday, but again my expectation from Apple is no difference than built in DAC from previous models.
