iPhone 7 Will Revolutionize Portable Audio for the First Time in a Decade

Agreed. Without controls it would be much smaller though, however still looks to big to fit in with the authentication chip in a normal lightning connector.

What would be nice is a case no thicker than the Apple silicone cases that have a nice competent dac and amp baked in, plus 3.5mm port. Many (most?) use a case anyway.

It's likely that in a non-reference design, they use a CSP (chip scale package) that isn't coated in plastic like these are. The package accounts for a majority of the space in this reference design.

Edit: Just looked it up, it does come in a CSP: https://www.cirrus.com/en/products/pro/detail/P1411.html

I am in the camp that there is no DAC in the adapter.

Nice post!

What has dismayed me most about this whole debacle has been the lack of empathy from those that believe we should all just man-up, get with the times, move on, progress, leave that 100 year dinosaur connector behind and fully brace the audio revolution that Apple has been courageous enough to start. Sorry, I just don't want to carry dongles or swap my SE846 for a pair of Bluetooth Beats headphones. This is about more than just a headphone socket. It's about a company I no longer trust. Yes, today it's just a headphone jack. What will Apple do tomorrow in the name of making even more money by gouging its customers progress?

I'm done with Apple and this thread. Time for me to move on. Good luck to all you folks with the dongles and the bluetooth.

I fully agree with you. The problem for me is that my whole family uses iPhones and I tire of being the odd man out who can't FaceTime, iMessage or be in real group chats with them. Guess I'm still going to have to carry two phones :-(

#literallyimpossible

Yawn. Are you saying it's literally impossible for me to be in that camp? Because that is all I am saying. I make no claims for you or for anyone else.

No i'm saying it is literally impossible for the adapter to not have a DAC

I heard you before you quoted me, but I don't believe it until I see it. Can you prove your claims?

I already did multiple times in this thread.

1) you cannot flip a switch and turn a digital interface into an analog interface

2) This adapter works with every single lightning iphone thats been released with IOS 10, I can flat out gaurantee apple did not build the PCB's in any to send analog signals through the lightning jack, if they had they would have already been using it, especially with the lightning->30 pin adapter which in fact, has its own internal DAC

3) The switching logic if they did, would be in teardowns of previous iphones, which it is not

Can we shelve the issue of whether there's a DAC in the dongle until we have a reputable teardown? It's been the same two posts for like ten pages now.

Just for reference, here is the tear down pic of the 30 pin adapter with the Wolfson chip

What a well thought out, backed by factual data argument! excellent discussion, you clearly know everything in the world about digital and analog interface design

I never clamed to know everything in the world about anything. You are very good at inferring things that may not be true.

Forgive me for not understanding, but I don't really understand the topic of this thread.

How will the iPhone 7 revolutionize portable audio? They are just removing a headphone jack and adding a second low quality speaker to finally have stereo like HTC and others have been doing for years.

Am I missing something?

You're not missing anything. It's a stretch. By removing it, it will force other manufacturers (including Beats) to innovate digital to analog conversion at the headphone/earphone level. I'm hoping the push for DSP correction is on.

After all these posts, finally someone I actually agree with.
