I hooked up the 3rd gen iPod Touch (with the latest updates installed), no dice.

pops up with a message that says the device is unsupported. Tried playing music just to make sure, and the music came out of the iPod's speaker.

I don't know anyone with a 3Gs to test on, so I suppose that's still up in the air.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I tried it on a 3GS. Didn't work.

The Wadia and Onkyo transport is a niche market and probably not even on Apples radar screen. Perhaps the next OS update will allow iPod touch and iPhone the same functionality. Would this make the Onkyo or Wadia transports "obsolete"? Still not 100% sure the camera kit would allow bit-perfect output. I understand Wadia is looking into it.

Also, why Apple associates USB cnnectivity with a camera photo transport and not for more general use, I don't know. Apple tends to be Nazi's with their stuff.

Yes. I meant in terms of making such decissions Wadia/Onkyo don't amount to a blip on Apples radar screen.

Apple granted them exclusive rights to access digital audio. This does not impose limits on what Apple can subsequently do with their products.

The question I have is what can Wadia still offer in light of the camera connection kit. Obviously the Wadia and Onkyo transport are not mere cables. More likely a quality USB to S/PDIF (?).

No, I'll read the thread. As far as being contrary for the sake of being contrary; that's a weird thing to say.

You suggested Apple would not allow the digital out because they made license fees off of Wadia and Onkyo. My point was clear; that relatively speaking (compared to the entire iPod, iPhone market) Wadia and Onkyo's niche market to people like us don't amount to anything such that those type of decissions would hinge on them.

I don't agree that Apple wouldn't allow USB for iPod or iPhone because of the relative tiny license fees they could get. What % of iPod or iPhone owners would buy bit-perfct audio device like a Wadia, 0.02%.

My apologies for suggesting you are being passive aggressive. I am just confused by your logic or lack of.

So you are saying that the sales of these Apple's licensed docks won't be affected by a Apple released device that can do basically the same job for around $30 or whatever? It's the same market. You could argue that coax is slightly better than USB, but $300 to $500 better?

It would be incredible if it worked on ipods and iphones, but it won't happen.

i think that the put he is trying to make, is that the main purpose of this device is to get pictures off of a camera, in that, being able to do so with a iphone or ipod seems like a natural progression. the fact that it also happens to work with digital audio as well is just a bonus, and as he said, doesnt really register on their radar.

Or music together...! An excellent featue - thanks for sharing.

Starved for more details here... Has anyone a/b'd the same files from their computer USB out (say Foobar) with the iPad USB out? That might not prove that it is bit perfect but does it at least seem to be same sound quality?

Never said that, and in fact quite on the contrary (sorry), as I questioned wether these bit-perfect docks would end up obsolete (doubt it), so obviously I'm sure they (Wadia/Onkyo) will be effected, but, as SoupR understands. Apple isn't going to base their decissions on our tiny niche market, or wether their decission effects such a microscopic market. I could be wrong, and you very well may be right that they will not allow the camera kit for use on the iPhone/iPod touch, I just disagree as to the stated reason.

I haven't compared but I don't have any reason to believe they'd waste the limited CPU resources changing the audio before sending it out via USB.

I agree. So long as there is no design compromise equivalent to Window's old kmixer which inadvertently reduced SQ. One would hope that Apple would not make such a mistake

In my limited auditioning last night, I would say that the iPad > camera kit > USB DAC sounds just as good as Macbook > USB DAC, using ALAC files and very highly resolving JH13Pro and ES3X IEM. I am excited by this. I do wonder about battery life and will test that later.

The Pico DAC > Pico Slim sounds noticeably better than the built-in iPad audio, but I have less than 1 hour of audio played through the iPad 3G internal headphone jack and I don't know if it will change with burn-in or not. I haven't even thought to compare the iPad audio to my iPhone 3GS which has been my favorite iPod, because I mostly use the iPad for the apps so far. (I had the Wifi only version for 4 weeks).
