Introducing Shanling SCD1.3 - New SACD player

May 25, 2024 at 7:28 PM Post #76 of 104
Hi, I want to tell you about my first week with the Shanling SCD1.3 player: I was looking for a CD and SACD player to be used mainly with optical discs and with almost no interest in streaming (I have another device for that). Searching on the internet I found the SCD1.3 which is the cheapest device for playing SACDs (at the same price there is also the Denon DCD-1700, a model from a certainly better known brand but which mounts the terrible DACs of Texas Instruments). This is the reason for the choice.
The impressions, however, are a mixture of satisfaction and disappointment: the satisfaction is given by the excellent audio quality of CD, SACD and Roon via airplay, the recognition of CDs is quite fast while that of SACDs a little less, the remote control does not have problems giving commands to the reader.
The disappointments are many, but minor, as they concern streaming playback, the touchscreen and the smartphone app:
- streaming playback: no gapless playback; every now and then the screen does not display the correct song covers; I encountered delays and poor compatibility with "mconnect" and "bubbleupnp" with which I had problems playing songs from the audio server to the player.
- the touchscreen is too sensitive, filling in passwords for the wifi network is a lottery, the scrolling of characters is too fast and never stops where you want it
- the smartphone app: terrible, it doesn't always connect to the player and when it does, the only settings that can be changed are the CD/SACD switch and the DAC filter settings, as well as the controls for playing the CD.
One strange thing (at least, I think it is) is that the DAC filters can also be selected during SACD playback: is this normal?
However, I find it absurd that when playing CDs and SACDs, information about the media being played is not displayed, such as album title, artist and song titles, especially when there is a nice LCD display perfect for that task.
I think I've said it all, excellent disc player, but insufficient in the streaming component.

Thanks for feedback.

On the digital filters, you can change them at any time, but they will have no impact on the playback of the SACD, if you are playing the DSD layer.

On the app - For SCD1.3, its main purpose is remote browsing of USB Drives. We believe that the setting accessible on the screen of SCD1.3 itself are enough.
For connecting, are you on Android or iOS? iOS should get the new update next week and that included some enhancement for SyncLink connecting.

For screen sensitivity and text scrolling, these are items we are still adjusting and plan to change over time.

I have an android smartphone. Is there really no possibility for you to integrate the CD information via cdtext or (better) freedb?

Our software team is looking into some possibilities, especially with accessing full database online, but so far no estimation on when that might be.
To my knowledge there is no progress towards CD text.

My firmware is V1.6. When I try to do a network update it says "Latest Fw. Installed".
OTA updates are always a bit later, if you want to update now you can follow the manual update as described on the website.

I think I have found the solution to the problem and it is caused by UPNP and/or DLNA being activated on the player.
Too bad I noticed this after they replaced my unit.
I would like to point out one thing that I find annoying: the lack of gapless playback for sacds. Between one song and another there is always a pause of at least 2 seconds and when I listen to live recordings (e.g. unplugged by Eric Clapton) the lack of continuity between one track and another is truly unpleasant. While with CDs this problem does not exist.
Isn't it possible to fix this problem in the future?

It doesn't really bother me but it's clearly yet another issue, although minor, with the SACD1.3. I hope they resolve this in a future firmware upgrade. I recently installed firmware update V1.8 and the gap issue remains.

Engineering told us that the gap is due to hardware performance on SACD reading, not something they can just fix with firmware update.
Why would this even be allowed for a high quality playback, I can understand the short fall on a unit like EC-Mini, but for a SACD player... I am seriously thinking to sell my unit and save up for a proper SACD player.

if I connect the SCD1.3 to an external Roon-ready streamer (such as Silent Angel M1T, USB DAC connection), would the screen show album info from Roon server?

No, USB DAC connection do not get you file info or album cover.
