I dont have nothing balanced... as far as I have read everywhere balanced is just a technology to eliminate the noise (due to the summation of two signals bla bla bla) and it is mostly useful when you need cables through large distances...

I know there are a lot of discussions right there about it. I dont want an off-topic here. Some people claims that balanced sounds better (I don't know why... or based on what) ... Zeos panthera in some recent video talked about soundstage and all that stuff.... and I dont get it.... how can be a technic for eliminate the noise improve a soundstage and/or image??

Anyway.... I just see that M5s balanced especs are different from SE.... so, may be balanced are claimed to sound better not because the nature of its technology, but because some device manufacters put different specs, like putting more effort and love, in the balanced output.
Is this the case? should I buy a balanced cable to enjoy more the M5s? it will sound better?

Balanced has more power, and more power drives speaker diaphragms better. More power also keeps noise down. Dual DACs in a balanced circuit can in theory produce better crosstalk ( stereo channel separation ) thus improving soundstage perception.

A lot of this depends on the specs of the SE output. On something like Sony ZX 300 in which the SE is only 50 mw/ch into 16 ohms and the balanced is 200 mw/ch - well you can see with some cans that need some juice to power them properly the Sony balanced out is going to do a much better job with 4x (simplification) the output power.

In other words, if you have 150ohm and up cans, that ZX300 balanced is going to sound MUCH better than the SE. However not all manufacturers have such vast power differences between SE and Bal.

We have new 2.0 firmware. I've just downloaded. Some minor bugs still remains. For example name of composers still ugly cut off.
But the sound is still the same - simply amazing.

Got hands on mine today too. Straight out of box I like it more than preceding unit m3s. Now it's time to leave it for few days and nights for proper burn in but I presume I can't expect drastic changes to happen after first 40h of baking.

With balanced circuit on Shanling M5s, you are splitting the signals and each of them goes through separate full audio circuit, which leads to measurably improved performance, mainly the output power and channel separation.

What it improves in the sound, as everything in audio, it depends on the listener. Most often you will hear about more control, better soundstage and localization, blacker background, etc. Some people on some headphones will hear it as small change, other people on different headphones can be shocked by how big is the difference.

5. Position of items in Idle menu were changed to allow quicker access to Sleep Timer.

6. Fixed problem causing white noise during playback of some DSD files.

7. Fixed problem of some cover arts not being displayed properly.

8. Other changes and optimization were done to following parts – Currently playing playlist, Volume bar, Network update, Deleting files, Auto shutdown during battery charging, Power saving while no music is playing, Wake-up from standby mode, System freezing.

Note: Firmware 2.0 added Hi-Fi Cloud music streaming app, but this app is only available within Mainland China. To view it in the menu, Language of device must be switched to Simplified Chinese.



How to update:


1. Make sure your device is fully charged.

3. Go to System update in System submenu, click on “TF card update” and confirm. Wait until system restarts. Check in settings About M5s to be sure new firmware is installed.

4. If Micro SD card was removed during update process, M5s will show “insert TF Please”, please insert Micro SD card back into your device in order to continue update.

5. If update doesn’t start after choosing “System Update”, please check if the file has been unzipped, if the file is placed in root folder, or if the file has been damaged during the transfer.

Over-the-Air firmware update

Shanling M5s can be updated to latest firmware version using Wi-Fi connection.

1. Connect M5s to Wi-Fi network connected to internet.

2. Go to System update in System submenu, click on “Network update”, confirm update and update will start to download and install. Wait until download and installation is completed and system restarts. Check in settings About M5s to be sure new firmware is installed.

Very early Beta version of our Android app, currently only in Chinese and serving mainly for logging into Hi-Fi Cloud Music streaming service, which is only for Chinese customers.
