Ok, i had a bit more time with few toys around... I like to test all of them on Shure846 when comparing, its just one of surprisingly more demanding earins and also most potent - if something plays it well it will play well anything. I tried also some more and different resitance type earphones - all were pairing great with this player.
Cayin n6ii (r01 r2r) is a good comparison for me as it has awesome module and is 3x more expensive (new) and a bit a "different beast", r01 is sort of more "natural" sounding and its a modern "r2r", and yes its good but what i experience is that r01 can give me a headache after some time, also r01 will not give me bass being felt in my lungs and the onix does give it, for some it may be even too much and some earphones can be overwhelmed. Whats worth noting the treble is ultra smooth in onix and completely headache free, i like it a lot, more than one in r01 (which should not be the case).
In general, I dont really care so much about technicalities but i own many daps/dac with many top r2r chips there (texas and ad), and they never give me headache, i think the modern r2r is not exactly same r2r as the ones from past. Anyway, onix xm5 is a device that gives a lot of fun and for me thats most important, the latest es9039 probably has something to do with this
I tried onix also on planar earphones and they pair excellently. Whats nice about the bass is that effortless slam, you can feel device has plenty of power, heavy but other frequencies are not hidden. If you come from a dryier dap you may be initially overwhelmed by bass but after short time it will go away.
GUI is really good, needs few small fixes but in general i like it a lot and it loads very quick,in few seconds. It has gapless that works!
I would make small changes in device design, they should not print the rw,play, ffw, fn letters, device can be used in each position (u can change orientation in settings) and buttons orientation also changes (great!), i would just put on buttons "x,-,II,-" signs, that would be perfect and match any orientation, i would also not put the buttons on the glass too (just shorter glass). The body should be magnesium-aluminum alloy - it would be nicer imo.
Btw. It turns that volume icon dissapears but u must click up or down areas, its actually ok. The volume knob is a bit wobbly, im not sure if this is how it should be, it works but just makes me being very delicate with it.
All in all, I would describe this dap as warm, detailed and slammy - plenty of fun, i can recommend it.
