Introducing ONIX Overture XM5 - First Portable Player from ONIX

Nov 11, 2024 at 6:07 AM Post #376 of 455
Just received my ‘replacement’ and they sent me a used unit. Really not happy.

I noticed that they were previously selling a discounted ‘open box’ XM5, which is no longer listed on their website. I guess they were trying to palm me off with that!
That is indeed unfortunate and not what I had in mind when I was so effusive in my praise for Amp3; I would be inclined to to call them and ask for a brand new unit; They should always give you the choice!
I have to say that this actually makes me reluctant to buy from AMP3. Shame.. someone else you can’t trust.

I've always owned Sony OS Walkmans (ZX300, WM1A/1Z), and I'm looking to replace a couple, trying another brand with the M5 Ultra or XM5.
Is anyone able to please compare the SQ and signature of the XM5 with the WM1Z? Also, the UI? The Sony UI is a bit dated but is very stable, how is the XM5's UI experience - I use folder view.
Thanks

Can say about UI- it’s stable with ascetic interface, I haven’t encounter any problems yet.
In my opinion folder view lacks letter bar navigator for fast scrolling and navigation, like in “all songs” menu.

@Rockcoon thanks for your reply, it shouldn't be a biggie for me.

As I had said, Sony's OS is functional and totally reliable, but it my opinion needs a refresh to update things like a drop down menu for faster access to functions like Bluetooth etc - unfortunately, they are older devices and haven't seen an update for years. I'm also looking to ditch the WM-port for USB-C.

Finally got the replacement, for my replacement!

My new unit has a strange thing where it will only charge if you restart it. Anyone else experienced it? I really hope it’s something that goes away 😫

It happens for me as well. Restart always fixes it but I cant deny it is annoying. Its just not enough of a hassle to ship it back and possibly get the same problem. Other than that, I don't had have any issue. Hopefully a firmware update will fix it.

Can you please tell us what exact chargers are you using?
Does the same happen if you try to use basic USB port on computer?
By any chance do you have USB DAC mode enabled, with charging disabled?

I have attached a picture of the current charger but I have had similar results across different chargers and different cables. See the picture when I connect it and compare after I restart the player with the same charger. Once I unplug the charger, I usually will need to restart before the player will recognize the charging cable.

Battery life seems good.

We checked with our engineers, they say this can be caused by incompatibility with the charger.

It's best if you can test it with a standard 5V/2A output charger or with USB port on computer.

I tested it out through my laptop and can confirm that it works repeatedly. Thank you for the help. I'll report back if it happens again through standard output.
