Introducing Audio-Technica's ATH-W1000X

Guess I may be the closest to your answer. I have the D3 which if I remember correctly some say sound better than the stock D10. My memory could be wrong. I also have the A1000X which is the W1000X without the wood. The D3 is a powerful portable amp. 42ohm is no problem for it. Matter of fact, it is a lot more stronger than my Headphonia or Xin Reference. Though I enjoy all three amps, the Headphonia sounds good but IMO is not in the same class as the other two.

Good recording classical and jazz is a hit. The mids are slightly forward but sill sounds good. Only old recordings with poor dynamic range makes the mids and vocals a bit annoying. J-Pop female voices are extremely annoying, way too forward, with most headphones I think.

I believe you will enjoy the W1000X with the D10 but a good home amp will make the ATs really shine.

superpredator,

look forward to your review. as for patience, yeah not in a hurry to buy the w1000x. still want to audition w1000x again when in japan next month b4 making a final decision. but in the meanwhile, any information on how they sound with portable amps is welcome.

sunneebear,

thanks for the info. didn't know the a1000x and w1000x had the same (similar?) drivers. as for the d10, i have the topkit and will also have the blackgate caps (already purchased) installed when I find someone near me to install them. so it should be moderately high level in ibasso lineup. and hopefully further down the line plan to get a nice home/desktop amp (Yammy ha-02?)..

on a lighter note, love the audio technica headphone launches..got to at least go to one of these in the future, they are always so beautiful...I meant the headphones

So can any1 answer my question about whether these headphones would be good all rounders or are they in the "specialist" category? I need a headphone which can still make crappy recording sound good... or to put it another way a headphone which isn't so revealing of the flaws. My AD1000PRM are great specialist cans but I am hoping the W1000X will be slightly smoother and more forgiving.

I don't think of them as being "specialist" in any way - they sound good to me on all kinds of music. But as for "making crappy recordings sound good" - nope. I'm not sure I know a headphone that will really do this, but if there is one, IMO, it's the JVC DX1000. It is definitely NOT the W1000X. Any headphone with a slight elevation in the presence region, like these have, is not going to help poor recordings at all. Maybe the opposite. But that said, I think they sound excellent on almost all my music - and if I listen to a bad recording, I just accept that it's bad

I agree on the headphone part. In case there would be something else, I wouldn´t agree.

Now they would be my favorite cans were it not for HD800.

Not sure either the fit, nor the stock AT sound signature is what I am looking forward.

This is exactly what I did and I agree completely with the above observation. I love the W5000 and it is one phone that I will never let go of. Maybe the 1000X is great also but I am happy with this phone and it fits the type of music I listen to perfectly. If I was into rock or metal maybe the added bass would suit me. Simply my impressions.
