IMR R2 Aten Thread

in fact I was a bit hasty ....
The driver is different, only one cable and no filters (I think).
Yes, I believe there is a logic to this, bringing more customers closer to the brand by offering products at a more affordable price.
At the moment, having R2 Aten I see no reason to buy red too.

Yes - it's great to see IMR going not only upmarket but also getting in the more accessible area. I am typing this while listening to the R2 Aten - my goodness are these enjoyable...

I am tempted to get the R2 Red just because I have all IMR IEMS so far. And I just purchased an R1 Zenith for a friend too. But I am going to restrain myself and wait for my Rah's

This is likely my last post on this topic, as I've had several days of consistent results, and even changing equipment today (From G7/ Mojo to G7/ ALO Rx) confirmed the same combinations.

After burn-in, and the first time I've EVER noticed significant changes during burn-in, here are my final combinations by preference (Filter/ tip).

1. Pink/ pink- great general use combination, balanced but not "reference," clear, articulate, girthy in the bass, but not overwhelming or over-warm, just a solid general listening combo with wide staging and proper (but not exceptional) detail retrieval. It's the most consistent and coherent of the filter combinations I've tried through my sources.

2. Red/ red- More dynamic, impactful, visceral in the bass and crystalline in the highs. This is about as V-shaped as I get, and it's a great way to listen to modern musical styles. Pop, hip hop and similar beat-driven genres benefit most from this combo, but it can get a little thick in the mid-bass region. Soundstage is HUGE, while detail retrieval takes a back seat to overall presentation.

3. Green/ black- This is a very vocals-forward, "reference" tuning that balances well enough, but the real purpose of this combo is to draw out details, textures and nuances in the music. This is a great combo for live recordings of rock shows, for instance, or to pull that last little bit of detail from a baritone aria. While some might like the overall tone for general listening, this combo isn't really what the Aten does best, but can be useful in certain circumstances. It does showcase the incredible versatility of these IEMs.

4. Gold/ blue- a specialist combo that turns the Atens into a tube-driven console record player. Really, it does a marvelous job of recreating that intimate, warm feeling I grew up with. For me, it's an instant nostalgia trip- I fell in love with music in front of one of those record players, and every time I use this combo, it brings me back. Gold/ blue isn't articulate, it isn't detailed, it isn't even particularly spacious, but it's magic, nonetheless.

Isolation? Not much. Volume can overcome this to an extent, but lawnmowers, air conditioners and motorcycle gangs are the Aten's kryptonite. No one would suggest a set of Sennheiser HD 600s for isolation, and they shouldn't expect supreme isolation from R2s, either. That said, these have soundstage to die for, and a tangible sense of space unmatched by any other IEM I've tried. The Atens are an experience as much as (or even more than) they are a product. If that sounds like your cup of tea, well, you have found your IEMs, with 2 potential caveats.

1. They are a challenging fit. What I mean by that is that I have very large ear canal openings, and finding a fit that did not irritate my ear was a challenge. Our 5' 1" daughter can't wear them at all- they simply do not fit inside her ears. With enough tenacity, they will fit the majority of folks in-between, but they aren't as easy or universal as, say, Shures, Westones or any number of recent semi-customs.

2. They are a boutique product in every sense. Expect small niggles like mandatory burn-in (yes, really), sometimes difficult and finicky filter/ tip installation, some minor cosmetic issues, etc. If you enjoy the charm of bespoke products, these will be right up your alley. If you're an OCD perfectionist, you may find some minor irritants. I fall into the former camp, and I am in love.

Is there not a way to save posts?

I applaud your resolve.

I have resisted buying any further IMR IEM's in reality I would love to own all versions, but my 1st purchase the Arten R2's have been so enjoyable and my daily driver, commute and all that I will resist and hold out for the RAH's

EDIT: I resisted buying ANY IEM's while I await the RAH's

EDIT ATEN not ARTEN

Good one @masterpfa !! I bought a set of B-Stock R1 Zenith for one of my best friends - who is into speakers. He received them yesterday and his words:
"Dude - these things are the bomb. I am listening to them for hours now since I got them delivered - my family sitting in the next room is using the phone to communicate with me - since I don't react to any voice input anymore....."

He also blames me for his upcoming demise - as he is sure to be killed in a traffic accident while wearing these outside. LOL

In my humble opinion, these reactions - that pure musical enjoyment - so far only IMR provides this in that very smile inducing emotional way.

100% agree, you are responsible :D

I only came about IMR after a comment regarding the Campfire Atlas in another thread. I had just tried at Can Jam and absolutely loved them especially the bass. The comment was along the lines of "IMR R1 match Atlas for bass" considering the price saving I had nothing to lose, at the time I cam to order the R2 Artens had been released.

The rest is history. My Shure KSE1200 I can now leave at home, no longer needed for my commute, but even when at home R2 Arten is still my weapon on choice

So I loved the zenith, then the arten 2 and have the rah on order. But holy cow now I got the ikko oh10. I own 40 iems, this is the new standard. The best soundstage, better bass and better treble than the r2. Wow!
Ok if no-one is going to say it, I will: what's an Arten? :p

I like your enthusiasm but there is no way you can mention the R1 in the same breath as the Atlas LOL

Sorry pal, on this thread we mention whatever we like with whatever enthusiasm there is in our heart. I personally don’t get the hype around CA in the slightest, having auditioned several iems of theirs. The fit is ridiculously bad, amateurish, and only at the $1000+ Andromeda did I start to see vaguely what they were trying to do audio-wise. I’d pick a re-cabled R1 over it any day of the week.

Edit: haven’t heard the Atlas, maybe it’s the bomb and ends everything else. Doubt I’d pick it over the Aten, but hey, I don’t know.

To all those who denigrate Bob for whatever reason, let me tell you this: a few weeks ago, my left Aten went dead. I reported it to Bob, and he immediately wrote back asking whether I would like to send it back for repair, or just get a new one, a simpler solution which only drawback would have been that it would need to be burnt in. I chose the second solution. After the email exchange, however, since I'm unable to keep my hands still, I opened them, found where the problem was (a few loose strands shorting on the shell), fixed it and wrote back to Bob to let him know that I had fixed the problem and there was no need to send a new earphone. His answer: it went out already. I offered to send it back but he told me to keep it, just in case. But wait, this is not the end of it: after a while, I get a registered padded envelope, I opened it and, lo and behold, there was not just one left unit but TWO, left and right! This is the kind of guy Bob is, everything else is nonsense.
P.S.: Can't wait to get my RAH!

Good to see another Head-Fier sharing their positive experience with Bob and IMR. Since the first time I emailed the guy about a year and a half ago (to inquire about the differences in a couple of different iems he'd designed) he's been nothing but great. IMR's customer service, imho, is right up there with Audeze's.
