iFi Zen Stream: Setup, Tips, Tricks...
Feb 15, 2024 at 12:19 PM Post #1,471 of 1,569
I watched a youtube setup video where the presenter said that even if you use USB out selected in settings, SPDIF is still active at all times. In my testing, this isn't the case.

Is there a way to have both usb and coax out working at the same time?

(and bonus question, has anyone ever gotten the ifi.local url to work? i always have to access the device with the full IP)
In the very first iterations of the ZS Firmware Roon users could output sound from both at the same time, by Naming them two different Zones, however, this is long gone after a firmware update. (Good Ole Days, lol)

I use ifi.local all the time, because I could never remember the IP address, lol
try clicking this with the Zen stream in AIO mode and use a Chrome browser, I have heard other browsers can have issues as it is seen as un-secure.

Cheers!!

ok, wild, it worked when i clicked it from my laptop in a different room, but from my windows PC i still get this error (chalk it up as progress at least)

It looks like the webpage at http://ifi.local/settings might be having issues, or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Yes that is odd, may be related to network or browser connections, but all of that is way beyond me, lol

That is how I always get to it, only I just type ifi.local and it appears. I have always used Chrome, don't have any firewalls or any security stuff on my network either unless it comes with what I pay for. I also use a Mac mainly, but I do have a Windows PC again with Chrome and have always been able to access it that way.

But I also have seen folks that can't, what its cause is I do not know, I would just save it as a bookmark and be done with it, lol

Cheers!!

I've given up on getting tidal connect to play nicely with the zen stream. I'm not sure if ifi or tidal is at fault but whatever I've moved on to Roon. When in AIO everything works perfectly with Roon but in Roon only mode the front circular lights turn off and therefore don't show network connectivity or bitrate information at all. Is this normal? Otherwise streaming music from roon ok...

It is odd how Tidal Connect is buggy according to quite a few folks.

If you are in any of the exclusive modes the lights should be on, I am a Roon user mostly in AIO because I need to check other things, but your lights may be out by an accidental press of the "LED ON/OFF" mode

When you are connected and playing music through Roon, give a quick press of the far right-hand button and see if your lights come on.

Hope this helps!

Here is another tip from a user that also seemed to help those with Tidal "Connect" streaming issues, give it a try, you can always go back to the way it was!

Here is the link to that post... https://www.head-fi.org/threads/ifi...evated-to-a-higher-plane.958391/post-16670574

This is accessed in the System Setting of the iFi app or thru your browser at ifi.local

Cheers!!
This works! After an upgrade to fiber in my network last summer or fell, I bricked my first Zen Stream, bought another one, and since then until this morning had only been able to use AirPlay to stream music.
Thanks to this helpful post, I was able to manually add ‘custom’ DNS settings 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to my WiFi network through my iPhone, and add them to the Zen Stream’s DNS settings using ifi.local via my iPhone, as well.
Now, I’m able to connect with Tidal and get the full experience again, with different colored lights on the Zen Stream, full use of my iPhone while enjoying music - everything I enjoyed about using the Zen Stream with Tidal before it went down when I received the fiber upgrade and my ZS stopped communicating with Tidal…
So happy to have my system fully functional, and very grateful to Live555i and MrBubbaHyde for making this tip available!!! 🫵😎
I’m kicking myself for not finding this earlier after doing enough resets based on MrBubbaHyde’s reset process and trying to mess with the ZS to fix this problem that it bricked my first ZS, when this info has been here the whole time!!! 😫

Glad to hear you got things rolling again, I try and keep the first post updated if something new comes along, in fact, I just updated it the other day.

Hope you have good continued use!

All,

Quick question-I hope.

Zen stream functioning well connected with Ethernet.

Loaded 3 more albums to Samsung SSD and rescan found and updated them.

Added songs to extant local file playlist.

Then cannot open playlist and play.

Keeps returning to same song from a week ago not pressed.

Attempted “clear and play” but keeps returning to same song.

Pulled SSD and rescan. No change.

Will pull up individual albums and play them through.

Seems playlist only issue but “clearing” does allow progression. Also brown left lower corner turns silver(?)

Hopefully this is simple but when one gets these things working one does not want to muck about and learn all functions.

Any assistance greatly appreciated!

Add that the playlist jumps to end where the added songs reside. It also will not play the other three established playlists at all.

Found cache screen and emptied it but just goes back to same song. Reloads it and latest added songs. Plays all then stops. (It is end of playlist.)

Thoughts?

Add one more issue-Had another SSD back up with same songs. Plugged in and rescan same exact thing. New songs ripped by same ripper to MAC and downloaded same way to SSD.
Odd.

Thoughts?

I will try and get to some tests myself as I have never used the playlist function, I am more of a full album listener.

But in all seriousness, I would report these app issues to support just so someone can try and duplicate and perhaps resolve what is going on there.

It is always good to report stuff that is not working correctly to them,

How does one roll back to an older firmware? I see people discussing it but not...how

I want to try the recent one out with Airplay 2 and "optimized cpu", but know Airplay 1 is considered better in some situations. I wish iFi allowed the option of either Airplay 1 or 2 in the "Functionalities Control" source toggle settings, would be helpful

You can only "roll back" to the firmware that shipped with the unit.

This is done by doing a soft reset located in the stream app or ifi.local

Go to settings, system, and look right near the check for updates function you will see the factory reset. Be sure to let it completely reboot without disconnecting power. This will return it to the software that shipped with the unit.

Anything other than that would have to be requested through support by submitting a ticket.

Hope this helps...

Cheers!!

@SHXMD

Started testing playlists with my attached Samsung SSD, would you mind telling me how to replicate the issue you are seeing, I know you posted what's happening, but I am not wrapping my head around it, lol

You can put it here or PM me if you wish.

Cheers!!

Sure will try.

1. Added 3 Albums to Samsung SSD using Apple Ripper to Mac Book pro.

2. Performed this procedure 3 times before adding 3 or 4 CDs. No problem.

3. Used Mac Book Pro to move media file or individual files/folders to SSDs (2) and one thumb drive. No problem

4. SSDs and thumb drive work.

5. Replaced SSD in correct ZS USB drive.

6. Rescanned and updated. No problem.

7. Moved 3 songs from Library to major playlist. (Total of 4)

8. Attempted to start Major playlist. Skips to one song (not added) 2/3 way through.

9. Re-started again and skips to same song.

10. Repeated times 4.

11. Deleted all three new songs. Goes to same song not added.

12. Deleted song it goes to.

13. Now try at beginning but goes to different song-each time when started. Song not chosen and not pressed.

14. Other three playlist will not play at all.

15. However, can go to any album and plays fine.
Entire album plays and then stops.

16. Decided to not file ticket and try soft restart. Could not get app to open.

17. Tried to do hard restart-went fine until tried ifi.local which would not open.
Hardwire…still cannot open on ifi.local or 192.

18. ZS on A1 and no firewall or proxy. Attempted Terminal app to locate ZS IP address but computer blocked it

19. Filed ticket-waiting.

Thanks for your interest!

Best,

Sean
